Sound on! The very unhappy, hissy #SonoranGopherSnake from a few days ago behind my house. This defense display was just a bluff, as it is most of the time gopher snakes do this. Poor little one was just afraid of us. After we took some photos, I picked him up off of the branch and he was finished hissing immediately. I’ve recently posted a few rattlesnakes we’ve encountered while in Mexico where you can hear them rattling, but did you know most nonvenomous snakes that don’t have a rattle will still shake their tail at you like a rattlesnake?!? This Mexican pine snake I found yesterday is exhibiting this tail rattling strategy. This is EXTREMELY common behavior for nonvenomous snakes to do, they mimic the venomous rattlesnake to try to trick a predator into thinking they’re dangerous to leave them alone, and to try to draw attention away from the head. Unfortunately many people don’t understand this and think any snake that rattles it’s tail is a venomous rattlesnake, resulting in people misidentifying the species and sometimes trying to kill a completely harmless snake. Venomous or not, don’t kill snakes! They have their purpose in nature and should be left alone, in fact a majority of venomous snake bites in the US result from people trying to kill/molest the snake when if they just left it alone they would’ve been fine. People always ask how to tell the venomous from nonvenomous snakes and the real answer is there is no trick, you have to learn the species of the area and be able to identify them.
