Gophersnake (Pituophis catenifer) from Kittitas County, Central Washington. These guys were starting to move around last weekend. I found 5 over Saturday and Sunday and many more were seen by the group.

Largo the Gopher Snake shed his skin! He lives in the Nature Club House in the Museum Backyard, and Naturalist @araneusgemma caught this masterful core workout on video. Stop by to check out the shed skin yourself. More info on this biological process from Curator of Vertebrate Zoology Paul W. Collins, M.A.: “Snakes shed their skin more often when they are young and growing more rapidly, and less often once they have reached their adult body size. As adults they will shed several times a year. Shedding is started by the snake rubbing up against a hard rough object (rock, bark or stick) to loosen the skin and to catch the start of the shed skin. Shedding begins at the head of the snake and proceeds to the tip of the tail. They generally crawl out of their skin as it is turned inside out. Think of it like taking off a sock which you turn inside out.” Largo is a full-grown adult Gopher Snake. He used to live in Santa Barbara Gallery (when it was named Cartwright Hall), but when he grew too large for that space, he moved to a larger habitat in the Nature Club House.
