Homesick is out now - link is in my bio!! We’re always chasing happiness. We tell ourselves, “when I get or do this, then I’ll be happy.” If I get this car, then I’ll be happy. If have this much money, then I’ll be happy. If this person likes me, then I’ll be happy. We chase and chase and chase happiness over and over and over again. There’s this idea in philosophy called ‘Telos’. It’s the notion that everything has a purpose. According to Aristotle, when you apply this idea to humans, our telos isn’t plain and simple happiness. It’s more in line with fulfillment, mastering and excelling at our own craft, whether that be sports, music, science, or whatever it is for you. We feel fulfilled by chasing a virtuoso status in whatever it is we’re passionate about, especially so when we reach that status. This is because happiness alone fluctuates. There’s another idea that everyone has a base happiness level that we always default to. It may temporarily increase or decrease, but it always comes back to that same level. So happiness is temporarily pliable, changeable. We aren’t designed to be in a perpetual state of bliss, so it’s better to chase your fulfillment in life, your telos. This gives your life a purpose here on Earth in a universe wherein we can’t be entirely sure if there is an objective point to it or not. If you chase your telos, in the end, you’ll feel fulfilled, satisfied, content with the way you spent your years. But that’s just a thought. Enjoy your day ❤️
