We got a chance to watch the newest #film from #chinese director #zhangyimou called Shadow. It’s a very Shakespearean tale of court intrigue and power struggles. Most of the sets and costumes are black and white and gray. It looks gorgeous and felt very stylish. The plot is a bit confusing, but it boils down to a City that was once part of a kingdom called Pei and has been occupied since it’s great Commander (#dengchao) was defeated in a duel against General Yang (#hujun). The Commander was mortally wounded by the deadly halberd of the General, but has a body double that only his wife knows about. This #shadow has been trained to act like him since they were both young. The shadow has now replaced him and has issued a new duel to retake the city. This is against the wishes of the king, who offers his own sister as a concubine to the General’s son. The weapon used to combat the halberd is an umbrella. During training, the wife suggests that feminine movements be used to counter the halberd. It was awesome to see this combination of both the masculine and feminine as a way to solve their dilemma. There are constant references to Yin and Yang, both through visual and dialogue. The shadow and the wife have, naturally, grown strong feelings for each other. All of this setup leads to an amazing sequence where the story cuts between the duel and an invasion of the city. The design for the Pei umbrella is awesome. The choreography in these scenes is phenomenal and left me admiring each shot. The finale of the #movie has a ton of twists and felt satisfying even as it left the viewer with unanswered questions. I can’t state strongly enough just how beautiful the movie is and I’m glad we got to experience it on the big screen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First Edition
Hardcover in dust jacket
A solid good+ copy in good dust jacket. The binding is firm and square. Board edges are rubbed with bumping to extremities and spine ends, nothing severe. Faint and minimal spotting to page edges. Internally, no markings. The dust jacket is overall complete, but edgeworn, with toning to the backside. The dj looks nice still and is covered with a brodart. See images for overall appearance. IMO, still a presentable copy, suitable for a bookcase or reader. Preserved in an acid-free archival bag.
I will happily answer any further questions.

Modern Library Giant #65
Hardcover with Dust Jacket
Introduction by Max Lerner. Complete and unabridged. This is still an early reprint, identified by backside of dj list of titles well past 65.
Not price clipped. Binding is square, solid, and still visually appealing. Light shelfwear only. Internally, there is underlining through and minor notes in margin. I state this for transparency, but the markings are NOT OBTUSIVE. See image for example. NOTE: the 2 final blank pages have more copious writing. While not collectible, this is a suitable reading copy ready for any bookshelf appeal or study. The dust jacket itself is a good mate as well for a better copy. The dj shows edge chipping and creasing, but not extreme. See images. The dj is covered with a brodart. The book is preserved in an acid-free archival bag.

Amberlough - Lara Elena Donnelly
••
The heat is on in Amberlough. Meet a smuggler, a dancer, and a spy, during a decadent era just before a political coup is about to set the city on fire.
••
This was one heck of a fun book. My favourite review on the cover was “rich and melancholy... so tragic, so gay!” which I feel like sums it up completely. .
.
Aristide (the smuggler) is a queer singer who dresses in extravagant outfits and amazing makeup (I imagined him just like Pree from Killjoys), who is sleeping with Cyril (the spy), who enters into a false relationship with Cordelia (the dancer) in order to infiltrate the rising fascist-esque political party, which is trying to take over the country in the next election. Yes, it’s a roaring 20s/burlesque style world in which the political intrigue centres around democratic elections, with rampant queers, a polygamous marriage, cocktail parties, cabaret acts and explosions. What on earth is not to love?!
