At 17, civil engineering major Asma Khan will be the youngest student to graduate from Portland State University this weekend. ✌️ . The topic of Khan’s age never comes up with her classmates. “None of them really have any idea,” she says. . . Born in California, Khan moved to Portland as a small child and was homeschooled for most of her primary school years. She skipped “a couple of grades” along the way and entered an early college program in high school that allowed her to complete her high school credits at community college. Khan enrolled in PCC at 13 and entered PSU at 16, completing her final two years toward a bachelor’s degree in @mcecs_pdx. . . . “In my two years of attending PSU as a fully veiled Muslim woman, I never once encountered a hostile incident or ever felt unwanted,” Khan says. “My teachers, advisors, and classmates were the most welcoming, friendly and helpful people, and I am thankful to them for making this journey so much easier and memorable for me.” . . . . #2019PDXGrad #portlandstate #proudviks #goviks #portlandstateuniversity #fearlessPSU #graduaton #go2PSU #onlyatPSU #PSUtopia #commencement

A lot of my new guests come to me feeling like their ends are completely blonde, their roots are completely dark, and there’s no blend in between. They feel confused because they thought balayage or ombré or whatever was supposed to be no maintenance and here they are with grown out color. Sound familiar? Here’s why! All of your hairs are growing at their own speed, living their lives, completely unconcerned with the way they were colored. If you get your color don’t once and let it grow, eventually it all just separates and ends up looking dark on top, light on the bottom, and no blend in between. So say it with me: it’s LOW maintenance, not NO maintenance! Color like this requires a retouch every 3-4 months (depending on your desired look!), with a gloss in between to refresh it all. Got it? Still have questions? Never hesitate to ask in the comments or send me a message! #annastasiasalonportland #lorealprous @lorealpro @saloncentric #saloncentricnw #ittakesapro @behindthechair_com #behindthechair #modernsalon #portlandnw #portlandmade #portlandstate #portlandmusic #portlandgirl #portlandlife #portlandstylist #portlandlove #portlandblogger #pdxphotographer #pdxbrunch #pdxdrinks #pdxigers #pdxliving #portlandhair #pdxhair #portlandbalayage #pdxbalayage #portlandhairstylist #pdxhairstylist

Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s balayage. IT’S BALAYAGE! So many brunettes come to me and say “I want a change, but DO NOT make me blonde.” Challenge accepted! This is what dimension is, this is what low contrast is. This is what it looks like to have a change without being blonde. Call it bronde if you want - I’ll just call it gorgeous! #annastasiasalonportland #lorealprous @lorealpro @saloncentric #saloncentricnw #ittakesapro @behindthechair_com #behindthechair #modernsalon #portlandnw #portlandmade #portlandstate #portlandmusic #portlandgirl #portlandlife #portlandstylist #portlandlove #portlandblogger #pdxphotographer #pdxbrunch #pdxdrinks #pdxigers #pdxliving #portlandhair #pdxhair #portlandbalayage #pdxbalayage #portlandhairstylist #pdxhairstylist

Sappy Mom Moment: My momma didn’t earn a college degree (she was busy raising strong minded children) but always told me I WOULD go to college. In fact, I didnt have the option - I was going to earn that Bachelors no matter what - even if it meant being big & pregnant my entire senior year at the UofO. As a first gen, I remember writing in my admissions essay to PSU’s College of Education that I never considered myself one for graduate school, though. I didn’t think I had the intelligence or discipline to be successful amongst the rigor of graduate coursework. After I got pregnant with Deon in 2016 though, it no longer mattered. I found that same mentality my mom also advocated about in myself. I was bound and determined to earn a Masters’ Degree, even if I wasn’t ‘smart’ enough or disciplined enough. I was going to get this degree for Deon and be successful for him. I look back on all the changes that have happened in the last two years, and that is the one thing that has remained the same - my deep determination to abundantly provide for my sweet prince. I already have plans to continue my education, earn my EdD at PSU, and its all for Deon. So few women of color can call themselves Doctors, and I want D to have that strong role model in his life, so he won’t have to experience that ambiguity and lack of clarity, confidence and community that I experienced as a first gen. Im so excited for myself for finishing this 2nd degree, but more excited for the long term implications it will have on my little baby’s future. Blubbering over.
