I love salads because: No cook-- great for summer and mom's who want to save time Use up leftovers-- my favorite way to fill a salad is using last night's dinner Nutrient packed-- easily incorporate the protein, carbs, fat, and color (fruits and vegetables!) that your body needs to replete your stores Variety -- switch up the components and dressings for completely different flavors Make sure to incorporate: ❇Protein (like grilled tofu and chickpea pasta) ❇Fat (like walnuts and sunflower seeds) ❇Carb (like chickpea pasta) ❇Color (like tomatoes, bell peppers, and berries) ❇Flavor (like honey mustard vinaigrette dressing) A great salad to me is filled to the brim with different textures and this one meets all my criteria. #thisispostpartum I am writing this from the perspective of a support person for a new mom. . This picture was taken 5 days after April had her baby. Her husband was back at work and her mom had gone back home. The adrenaline of a having a new baby has worn off and she is left at home all day with 5 young children. . I came over to grab her older kids so that she could have some time to nap and snuggle the baby. She didn’t know how to tell me exactly what she really needed, so I just assumed taking her older kids would be helpful, which it really was. But it wasn’t the thing she really needed. . Luckily, she felt safe enough to talk to me. What she really needed in that moment was for me to listen. To listen to the things in her heart and mind. Some of what she was feeling didn’t even make sense to her, but that is how she felt. She needed to talk and cry it out. . Taking her kids so she could rest was so nice, but that isn’t what she really needed. At that moment, she needed adult interaction. She needed to get out of her house. She needed to feel like she used to. . Having a baby changes everything and that is wonderful and really hard. You don’t have to stuff all of the weird feelings of “loss” after having a baby. You did lose what life used to took like. And that needs to be mourned too. . My advice to those that have a close friend or family member having a baby is to be there, not just for the first few days but for days and days and days after. If you are far away, call and just listen, being able to talk about the most irrational feelings is healing for a new mother. If you can help them feel better do, but I promise just listening and understanding is doing a lot.

I promise it tastes good . . After a super filling breakfast and a long walk in the afternoon summer sun, a heavy lunch was not appealing. Plus I was so thirsty. . . So I made a protein smoothie. But I don't love using protein powders (additives, contaminants, expensive). So instead I make sure I'm getting enough protein with food. Adding tofu into a smoothie makes it nice and thick, filled with plant protein, and doesn't affect the taste! . . For additional protein and some healthy fats I included peanut butter and hemp seeds. I rounded out the smoothie with a frozen banana base, local berries, and spinach (and a splash of soymilk). . . Smoothies are great ways to keep hydrated and nourished when you need something convenient or aren't in the mood for making or eating a full meal. (And great to sip on while nursing!) . . Did someone ask for easy meal ideas? Based on my story poll yesterday, almost 70% of you wanted more! . . So here is another balanced meal that you can make in four easy steps. Call it a loaded baked potato or breakfast for dinner with a twist, either way it's a hearty meal that is packed with nutrients. . . ⏱Time saving hack: bake the potatoes ahead of time when you have the ability to throw a few in the oven and roast instead of waiting for the dinner rush. For me, Adelaide was so much more likely to let me put her down earlier in the afternoon so I tried to get some meal prep done then, because come dinner time, girl needed to be held. You could also bake them over the weekend or at night and then all you need to do is quickly reheat! . . Carb= baked potato (hello potassium, vitamin C, and fiber) Vegetables= sauteed kale, tomatoes, and onion (hitting you with folate, lycopene, and flavonoids) Protein= scrambled eggs (a favorite quick protein!) Flavor= avocado, full fat Greek yogurt, and salsa (the fat helps you feel satisfied!) . . Lots of ways to customize this meal to your preferences. Maybe you'd prefer sweet potatoes as a base, maybe broccoli for veg, ground beef as a protein, and a sprinkle of shredded cheese for flavor! . .
