So what is "precession?" Defined, it is "the slow movement of the axis of a spinning body around another axis due to a torque acting to change the direction of the first axis." In terms of your #Seakeeper, it looks like this fore and aft tilting of the sphere. UK Dealer, #Osmotech, installed this Seakeeper 5 in a Botnia @targaboats 44.
This is SS 433, a microquasar first discovered forty years ago and located about 18 000 light-years away in the constellation of Aquila (The Eagle). This image, captured for the very first time at submillimeter wavelengths by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), is special because it shows the jets emitted by a hot, swirling disc of material encircling the black hole at SS 433’s centre. Owing to its relative proximity, SS 433 is a particularly useful object for researchers looking to learn more about microquasars and the jets they emit.⠀

The corkscrew shape visible here is created by a phenomenon known as precession; as they move outwards through space, these two jets are slowly tumbling around an axis in a similar way to the motion of a gyroscope or a spinning top slowing down, the orientation of their rotational axes changing as they do so. The scale of this corkscrew is enormous, at 5000 times the size of the Solar System.⠀

Hydro-Gyro: the effect of centripetal acceleration on a liquid. Note how the surface of the water is flat and parallel to the center rotation axis of this spinning gyroscope- a small boat would float on the water with its top pointing towards the center. One way to simulate gravity. Sold in the Discovery Stores in the 1990s, sadly no longer in production. ➡️ Folow the link in my profile for info on where to buy many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #physicstoy #physics #centripetal #gyroscope #fluidstatics #angularmomentum #artificialgravity #rotation #science #precession #scienceisawesome
Euler's Disk: (best with sound on) this toy exhibits the motion of a “spolling” coin, a motion that combines spinning and rolling. Designed with a large mass and very smooth edge, this device takes close to 3 minutes to come to rest- and amazingly, the contact point between the disk and the mirror can reach a speed of more that 200 mph! This video catches the first and last parts of this 2 minute and 42 second run, with two cuts to 240fps slow motion to show the curious motion. Watch the end with the sound on! ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where buy this and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #Euler #EulersDisk #spinning #physics #physicstoy #angularmomentum #dissipative #precession #sprolling #precessionrate #spinning #spinningtop #rollingfriction #science #scienceisawesome
Maxwell’s Dynamical Top: another demonstration of the strange properties of rotating bodies created by the great physicist James Clerk Maxwell. When this massive brass bell-shaped top is spinning an interesting stability can occur- push on the stem with an object (like a pencil) and the top will push back, forcing the stem against that object, and friction will cause the stem to roll along and trace the edge of the object. In this design the stem will trace along the edge of a metal spiral, clinging to it like a magnet- but magnets are NOT involved here. The key to this design is to make the contact point/tip of the top at its own center of mass, then any frictional force in contact with the stem will produce a torque about the contact point at right angle to the direction of friction that creates the stabilizing force (students of physics may recognize application of the right hand rule here). An extreme physics toy! ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get most of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #angularmomentum #rotation #torque #vector #vectoraddition #precession #physics #physicstoy #MaxwellsTop #dynamical #spiral #friction #rollingwithoutslipping #spinningtop #science #gyroscope #gyroscopic #scienceisawesome
Centripetal Kinetic Toy: seven rolling steel balls hug to the inside of the acrylic sphere given sufficient velocity. Here the balls are launched such that their orbits are in the same plane, and due to their angular momentum (and a torque due to gravity) the plane of rotation precesses like the axis of a spinning top until friction slows them down. This toy was made in 2007 (sadly no longer in production) and marketed under the name "iBall". ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get most of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #physics #physicstoy #kineticart #kineticenergy #torque #angularmomentum #precession #centripetal #centripetalacceleration #science #scienceisawesome
The ΦTop - Golden Version: spinning things have surprising physics! This unique top is made of solid brass in the shape of a prolate elIipsoid- and the name of the top is derived from the following design requirement: the ratio of the semi minor (short) axis to the semi major (long) axis is made equal to the mathematical constant the golden ratio φ (phi). Invented by astrophysicist Kenneth Brecher, this top stands up vertically (when spun with sufficient rotational velocity) due to physics similar to that of the tippe-top. The concave mirror keeps the top from wandering off and the glass surface has minimal friction allowing the top to spin for a long time- this video shows various stages of 8 minutes of total spin time. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get this top and many other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #ellipsoid #oblateellipsoid #conicsections #tippetop #torque #angularmomentum #rotationalinertia #PhiTOP #physics #physicstoy #flip #flipover #precession #spin #spinning #top #spinningtop #science #scienceisawesome
Mystery Orbiter UFO: hidden within this flying saucer shaped toy is a gyroscope, allowing it to balance at seemingly impossible angles, and causing it to precess around an axis through the contact point. The physics and vector nature of angular momentum! Tesla’s Egg of Columbus: a copper ellipsoid egg (PhiTOP) mysteriously spins and stands upright in this modern version of Tesla’s famous demonstration from the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago that first showcased the principles behind wireless power transfer and his AC induction motor. Rotating magnetic fields from under the wooden platform induce electric eddy currents to flow in the copper PhiTOP- these currents then create their own magnetic field which oppose the initial fields underneath and pushes the PhiTOP to spin. This version I built differs from Tesla’s in that the rotating magnetic fields are created by, well, a pair of rotating neodymium magnets (revealed by lifting the top platform in this model). Credit to astrophysicist Kenneth Brecher, the creator of the PhiTOP.
