Laying on the floor with my girl, thinking about our trach/vent life . Recently, we’ve had a few experiences in public (on the way to doctor appointments) that have been less than stellar. After conversations with a few of our medically fragile friends, I realized that uncomfortable public exchanges are more common than not. This week, while checking in for Lily’s appointment, the woman working at the front desk asked me “What’s wrong with her?” which completely took me aback. Our friends have been asked things like this, all unsure of how to answer. Do we put our heads down and carry on? Do we use this as an opportunity to educate? I love that people are interested in learning about Lily’s accessories, but wish that we were treated less like a freak show and more like humans deserving of compassion. @thesmallestfight ・・・ 07/18/17 - This is Baby B in the first video I took of him. It took me over a year to be able to watch this. It still makes me nauseous and that dinging puts me right back in the NICU. . It’s hurts because he was so fragile and helpless. He needed to be in his mothers arms, but that was not an option at the time. . Babies born this early have eye lids fused shut, their skin is translucent and they are prone to brain bleeds. We were not allowed to touch our twins for days after birth. The nurses also touched them as little as possible for risk of overstimulation which would further increase the risk of brain hemorrhaging. . The first 72 hours of life are when they are most prone to brain bleeds because their blood vessels are so delicate. We were never asked if we wanted the medical team to do everything possible to save their lives, but I know many parents in this situation are asked the question. Perhaps, the medical team already sensed our answer. We were all in and ready to fight with everything we had. . The reality behind this photo is not predictable. It is a new Mum who was separated from her baby from the moment he was born. A new Mum who had to wait +4 months before she could bring her baby home. A new Mum who has been left with anxiety, post natal depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Behind this photo is a baby who was born 15 weeks early, and had to fight for every breath. A baby who has overcome a life threatening bowel disease with 3 surgeries (and has the tummy scars to prove it). A baby who defied all of the odds and ‘worst case scenarios’ we were given by doctors. Today, you would never guess our story if you saw us on the street. My introduction to motherhood has not been conventional, but it has taught me so much about what is important. Theo and I were the only two people who spent every single 109 of those days together in hospital, and because of that we have the strongest bond. On days like today when I didn’t even make it out of the house (and feel like I didn’t achieve much), I just need to remind myself how far we’ve come.
