"RUBBER DUCKIES" - Made a mistake making this print, as you can see. The bottom part does not align with the upper section, so the rubber ducks became slanted hexagons. This series is actually really confusing to make because of the simple repetitive almost hypnotic shapes that takes extra care and attention to position and align correctly. For someone who gets distracted easily -- I often experience drifting off in thought and realizing I made a mistake because I wasn't fully focused on printing -- it takes some practice to make it work. I also realize I enjoy pattern design because of its repetitive nature that allows me to automate my hands and lose myself in unrelated thought. "JACK OF DIAMONDS" - Hexagons are real nifty shapes. They make great modular pieces cos they snap perfectly onto each other. You can fit all sorts of shapes in them - be it triangles, stars, squares. If you draw an X in the middle, it looks like a 3D cube (for a hexa with equal sides at least). I'll be taking a break next week, hoping to get inspiration for the next series. I feel so lost and dry. Looking to read books on blockprinting and printmaking cos I realized I have no idea what the history of this artform is. Betty Edwards said copying the works of the masters is the best way to learn technique. So maybe I'll move forward that direction with my carving exercises. "MRCHEV" - What I like about printmaking is the lack of control in how each print would look. There are so many factors in play -- ink, paper, stamp material, pressure, etc - all of which affect the texture and tone of how your design looks when printed. This appeals more to me than if say I make this design digitally -- unless I add some programmed texture effects, it wouldn't look as authentic and natural. This style gives a good balance to geometric shapes, which generally look lifeless when rendered flat. #Day42 of #100DaysOfInkPatterns. "HELICES" - Simple tile with interesting results. If I position the tiles a certain way, I can enlarge the helix to an indefinite extent. Makes me want to try printing this on a larger sheet of paper. Future project idea! Took the liberty to skip a couple of days in my #100dayproject. I'm taking it easy since I'm almost halfway through (!). It's crazy looking back at my "past" work from last month and cringing because I know it could be better. The magic of #the100dayproject is that it forces you into an ideal lifestyle of an artist - creating everyday. I recently read a book called Art & Fear (Bayles and Ortlund, 1993), which said that "the seed for your next art work lies embedded in the imperfections of your current piece". Imperfect pieces are stepping stones to your greatest work. And the more pieces you make, the closer you get to the goal. In the realm of artmaking, quantity produces quality. "NUCLEAR STRIKE" - My ink pad got real messed up today. I dunno how to reink it, so it gave me explosive blots on my printing. "RATATAN" - What's fun about blockprinting is how you can use the space in between prints to form shapes. In this example, I used a '+'-shaped tile that form a couple of new shapes using the negative space.
