The closing of another successful 10-week song-writing program on 2 yards at RJD. These 10 weeks were particularly trying and they taught us all a lot. A 150 man-riot in February broke up the first half of classes, causing us to lose students. It was a war zone that sent a number of our students to other facilities, placed some in the SHU and another was left in a coma. You could sense the tension in the air the first week back after all the chaos. At the end of the 10 weeks the experience definitely solidified some connections across racial lines and created a camaraderie that could have only been facilitated through heartfelt music. After 20 years, Richard Mireles is home from prison. He was one of the earliest Initiate Justice Inside Organizers, a student, a teacher, a facilitator and creator of amazing programs including one that trained and certified incarcerated people as drug and alcohol counselors. Because of #prop57 he was able to earn a year off his sentence and come home last Wednesday. Welcome home, Rich.
