Wine tasting and storytelling about about Dostoyevsky... that is my perfect evening. Thank you @pushkinhouselondon for organising this wonderful event!
.
We were taken through the life of Dostoyevsky and the wines he may have consumed during his numerous travels through Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy. The wines were delicious and the talk was intimate, whimsical and illuminating.
.
A few interesting facts discovered along the way...
Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s father, Mikhail Dostoyevsky, came from a line of priests and was expected to join the clergy. Instead, he ran away from home, broke ties with his family and became a doctor. He served as a senior physician at Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor. Fyodor grew up on the hospital grounds and it is believed his strong affinity to the poor originated from this experience.
Fyodor was part of a literary group that discussed banned books which were considered to be critical of the Tsar. For this he was sentenced to death and was subject to a mock execution. He subsequently spent four years in a Siberian prison camp, followed by six years of compulsory military service.
His life was marred by his gambling addiction. He was often destitute and at one time could only afford to have tea in the morning and at night. He and his second wife were said to have been most happy when they had no money at all: that is, no money to gamble.
A publishing house loaned him 3,000 roubles on the condition that he would submit a novel by a given deadline, failing which the publishing house would be entitled to his earnings for the following 9 years. This led him to write The Gambler in 26 days.
Victoria Lomasko is the strongest voice in Russian socio-political cartooning - as she calls it, graphic reportage - and that means things aren't always easy. The reporter-artist has faced harsh treatment in Russia for her graphic portrayals of everyday life which some would prefer to be ignored.
.
Since struggling to find support in galleries and media at home, Lomasko has attracted attention abroad with her 2018 exhibition On The Eve at @pushkinhouse and a feature in @newyorkermag following a US tour. Her dark, funny drawings of 'everyday Russians' seem to speak to everyone, regardless of nationality.
.
You can explore Russia through Lomasko’s eyes with her book Other Russias, 2018 winner of the prestigious Kandinsky prize. Search russianartandculture.com to read Emily Couch’s interview with this daring artist.

SOLD! I am delighted to announce that all five of the largest in the show (as big as 10ft in some cases) have found a home together with a very eminent Russian collector. I could not have dreamed of a better destiny for the works, and I'm so grateful for this outcome. Thank you so much to the team @pushkinhouselondon for curating the show so beautifully and for all your support throughout this process and @90degreespictureframing for making the pictures look fantastic. @r_e_d_c thank you ☺
Proceeds are going towards future education plans and supporting my continuing journey as an artist.
