Do you think being armed with research is still as useful in today's world of fake news, confirmation bias, and social media bubbles? What can we do to make sure research continues to be important?

So the time has come where I should probably introduce myself. So, hello and welcome to show! I'm Heather, and here's a little about me:
.
1️⃣ I'm a fourth year PhD Candidate in Education at the University of Ottawa in Canada. My research explores how social emotional learning initiatives function within school systems. I previously researched bullying prevention and teacher self-efficacy. While this is still part of my research, I'm trying to zoom out a bit and get a sense of organizational learning and functioning. .
2️⃣ I'm quite active within my student organization and have a passion for supporting others through their educational journey. As an undergraduate student, I started at 23 (after dropping out of uni at 18). It was a lonely process, and the isolation only gets worse as you move through graduate school. So I make an effort to provide support to those who need it, from grabbing a cup of coffee to helping with funding apps and navigating the graduate system.
.
3️⃣ While my research is qualitative, my heart is in stats. I tutor statistics for the social sciences on the side and absolutely love those ah-ha moments when I've made stats relevant to the learner.
.
4️⃣ I started teaching this year. It was terrifying! But so cool and exciting. I taught health and physical education to teacher candidates and emerging technology and learning to graduate students. Teaching technology was by far my favorite as my side research interests are in technology and learning.
.
5️⃣ Puss Puss is the #phdcat. She makes sure I takes breaks and thinks I spend too much time on the computer.
.
6️⃣ I'm a very proud aunt and would much rather be drawing on the walls with my nephew's than writing some days.
.
What else do you want to know about me? Feel free to introduce yourself!

Process brings transformation ❤️
Do read the post:
Honestly, I do not enjoy practicing backbends but I love them and I adore people with good and stable backend practice. While practicing on my own I have to literally fight with my mind alot in order to convince it to bend backwards but I choose to practice them especially when my mind is not really calm or especially when I am going through any emotional turbulence.
Why? Well there are many reasons behind it. First of all I can never force myself into advance backbends, my back takes its own sweet time to get ready for backbends. The process teaches me to be calm and give it a time. It teaches me to be patient (I am really trying to work on that) and listen to my body.
Practicing backbends is always challenging and it always underlines the importance of consistency and taking step at a time towards right direction. It teaches me that going through the process is important than end results and following process is what makes you transform ❤️
Staying calm, giving time, being patient and following the process are the key learnings I get from my backbend practice which are implementable in normal life as well

Submitted a 2nd manuscript for potential publication in a journal this past weekend. It was in the middle of the night & as I hit “submit,” I felt an extreme sense of giddiness (at the potential of having a 2nd publication at some point in the future...hopefully before I go on the market), along with fear, nervousness, and wonder.
.
Part of me wished I had a life partner so that I could have asked him to be a second pair of eyes on my manuscript before I hit submit.
.
Another part of me wished I could have run out to a local salsa spot to release all of the tension I had built up in my body from writing-and-not-moving all week (but sadly, I left NYC to pursue this PhD and the clubs here are not nearly as fun + they close by 1:30/2:00 am).
.
Most of me felt grateful to be able to explore my intellectual passions and curiosities—one of which is Robin DiAngelo’s theory on white fragility. I’ve never met her but I love her!
.
Anne Huff has written about how researchers need to “join a conversation.” This is 1 of the conversations I want to join...except, it’s not currently in my field (Management/Organizational Behavior) + professors at various universities have advised me to reconsider writing about a topic that will likely trigger the mostly white audience in my field who won’t even want to read my work (the irony! Robin would call this “fragility”).
.
Yet this topic is so fascinating to me + it has come up in all of my unstructured/exploratory interviews this semester... so, why else am I staying up at all times of the night + sacrificing gym time, outdoor time, socializing time & the potential to have a husband/babies while temporarily living in the Midwest if I’m NOT going to be passionate about my research topic? ♀️
.
What are you all researching & what inspired your areas of research?
