CK got an extra big helping of grapes on his tray tonight. Eleven months ago today this sweet boy came into my life. I had no idea how much he would change my life. Since he was about 4 weeks old when I got him, we are calling May 19th his official birthday. So happy 1st birthday, CK! I love you to the moon, even if you are getting a bit cranky in your old age. 😉🦝🦝🦝

In case you've ever wondered what 8 baby raccoons looks like... Today we upgraded our original four (the #mysteryincgang) to a larger carrier. The new four (#spicecoons) were already in a larger carrier, but we gave it a quick clean. Everybody is now back in the nursery to sleep some more before dinner time. CK is glad for the chance to run around the house!

A video from early on with the mystery Inc gang. Today is quite a milestone. These guys are 4 weeks today. 4 weeks. We have passed a big hurdle and I couldn't be happier with how these babies are doing! I'll admit I feel a bit lighter today. The best is yet to come...

I'm sorry for my radio silence. The last 24-hours have been a roller coaster. Yesterday I received these 4 raccoons who had been separated from their mama who had been trapped and relocated. They had not been with a rehabber yet, and so I learned that you have to force feed the babies until they learn that formula is food. They cried for their mama. Couldn't understand why I was forcing their little mouths open. Y'all, I cried through that first feeding. I was angry that they were having to go through this. I was angry that I was having to do this to them. And I was so sad for their little cries for their mama.
It took an hour and a half to feed all 10 raccoons. And that wasn't even feeding the new 4 as much as they needed to be fed. I just couldn't keep forcing formula past their little cries. This morning I texted another rehabber about getting these 4 to them. I was dreading the 5pm feeding. I saw a message in my Facebook messenger. This message had been sent in April but I had missed it! It was a friend of a friend offering her help with any babies. We began texting this afternoon and she offered to come help at 5. The rehabber I had spoken to earlier hadn't gotten back to me about taking the babies to her tonight. We had some pretty severe storms this afternoon and I knew she was probably tied up taking care of her home and animals. Tricia stayed for THREE hours. It took THREE hours to feed 10 babies because I was determined to give the 4 new ones the full amount of food their little tummies needed. You guys, suddenly at the end, 3 of the 4 took the bottle! I didn't have to force feed them!! Whew. I literally couldn't believe it. It was only because I had someone there cheering me on.
I have had so many people come along side me in this journey. Whether it's help with a single feeding, help building an enclosure, donating items, purchasing stuff off our wishlist, every one of those things have made this journey possible. We are so grateful. I don't know if these babies will stay long term (10 is a lot!), but for now we have Pepper, Cinnamon, Poppy, and Saffron. ♥️🦝
We definitely have our hands full! I just picked up 4 baby raccoons who are about 2 days old. Unfortunately they were separated from mama, and with the storms pending tonight, we couldn't wait and see if she returned for them. These guys are fragile being separated from mom so early. Nature isn't always kind, and at this age, anything can happen. We'll do our best to see all 4 survive!
I think I have names picked out, but I'm still settling on who is who. We are on to a new adventure!

Last year we had an adult raccoon with us for a short time. It was hard. But I loved her. She ended up staying in the neighborhood, and would occasionally come to visit. One of my absolute favorite things was when Lois would come for grapes, and she would hold my hand in her soft paws until she got to eat all of them. Today a neighbor contacted me. Raccoons keep getting into their attic. They had trapped and released 2 of them out of the neighborhood, but the trap wasn't working for the other ones they were trying to catch. I haven't seen Lois since March and I'm pretty sure she was removed from the neighborhood. I am devastated. Not only will she not survive outside of the neighborhood, but any raccoons in the area where she was released will likely maim or kill her.
Please don't trap and relocate raccoons. I told the neighbor that they need to put a light and a radio on in their attic. The raccoons will move out on their own. Then they need to call and have their attic sealed up. Why you wouldn't seal it the first time is beyond me. Removing the neighborhood raccoons will not keep new ones from moving in. In fact, it will invite new ones. Live and let live. Take steps to make your house unattractive to wildlife (Don't leave trash or food out, etc). Removing Lois was unnecessary. I know they meant well, but my heart is broken today. I miss my girl so much.

Fred was NOT happy that he was the last one to be fed! 😆 Oh the drama.

My six sweet raccoons. 😍 Mimi is the lighter colored, twitchy one on her back. And to the left is tiny little Etta (she's almost butt to butt to Mimi). When she curls up next to her nap buddy, you can see just how tiny Etta is compared to the others. Etta ate much better at her 9PM feeding, and almost as good at her 1AM feeding (which is when I took this). They'll all be getting breakfast shortly, and then they won't get to eat again until around 4:30. Hopefully she'll be extra hungry and will eat really well this evening!
