The Duke of Kendal, Connaught Village. Unfortunately not all experiences are good ones and I’m no different to anyone else in that if I think something isn’t right or good I’ll call it out. I’d wanted to visit here for years and had high expectations. It’s certainly a beautiful building wedged in a V at the fork of the road. Stunning flowers adorn the pub exterior and it looks inviting from the road. The interior is also decent with a sharply decked out raised rear restaurant and lower front bar area. I also love a bar where glasses hang down as it creates an intimate barrier between the punters and barkeep. However, the staff themselves were absolutely miserable. I always take great care to be pleasant to pub staff as they put up with a lot of nonsense and rewards are not plentiful. But, to say the team here were cold and monosyllabic in their responses is an understatement - just not how you run a welcoming pub in my book. Also there were no medium wine glasses for Mrs.LPE, just 125ml or 250ml, which is a game changer if I’m drinking pints and not exactly encouraging responsible drinking. There were also very carefully delivered short measures on both our drinks which for me is unforgivable. The atmosphere in the bar was dead and the place just felt lifeless. It was a shame as the outside benches look so inviting in the good weather but I will not return. Perhaps it was just me. [North Brewing Co. x Boxcar - Sour IPA - 6.0%] _____________ Appearance: Pours the most vivid, dark, thick purple colour, no head or carbonation, just looks like a blueberry smoothie. Mouthfeel: Quite thick for a Sour, very smooth and full bodied. Flavour: Thick fruit all the way through, blueberry takes the forefront with a light, tart salinity. The peach is more subtle with bag loads of sweetness, with a light raspberry inclusion overarching everything with that sharp juicy bite. Aftertaste: Juicy, lip sticking sour fruits with a bitter sweetness, but also a light funky edge. _____________ Overall: Not quite at the level of Triple Fruited Gose, but this is still really good!
