Pierre Overnoy is a legendary figure in the natural wine world: a pioneer, especially in his avoidance of the use of sulphur, he stopped adding it since 1968. Pierre started his career at the family Domaine in Pupillin, Arbois with 2,5 hectares. Jules Chauvet, the Beaujolais négociant and wine researcher, was a mentor and a friend to Pierre #Overnoy since the beginning. Overnoy’s goal was always to make wines of terroir, which would reveal the key of their soils and accurately reflect their vintage. Since 2001 the vines and the cellar are now solely in the hands of Pierre Overnoy‘s protégé, Emmanuel Houillon, who carries on the philosophy and each painstaking detail of his mentor. Emmanuel worked with his wife Anne until his brother Aurélien joined them as a partner in 2007. Without sulphur the quality of the grapes has to be exceptional and so everything in the vineyard is done totally organically. Vintages from Overnoy’s era bear his name, while more recent vintages are named after #Houillon. I really ought to drink more Riesling as it is perfect for the local weather and food, especially when it is made with skin-contact that makes the grape even more versatile when it comes to food pairing, such as this Austrain example from Zillinger. Numen is @johannes.zillinger non-intervention line. The Riesling is made from 30 years old biodynamic vines that is fermented on skin in Amphora and aged in steel before being bottled unfined, unfiltered with no SO2 addition. Tasted in Zalto Bordeaux, the 2017?needed some air to open up (in hindsight maybe I should have decanted this). There is plenty going on in the nose with citrus, white orchard fruits and herbal aromas. Energetic and salivating with zippy acidity that compliments the cool minerality. No.6 and last bottle of #ChampagneWeek , this truly is a case of saving the best for last. Lahaye's Violaine is his only sans soufre cuvée and one of my favourite wine in Champagne. Tasted in Zalto Universal, this is pure and pristine with refreshing floral aromas, reminiscent of a spring breeze passing over a flower field. The palate is lean and clean with chalky minerality. A few years ago, this line-up in my home city would have been an impossible dream. It wasn't just that they were not available to procure, it's also the fact that even on the off-chance that I did carry them back from Europe or Japan, I would not have anyone who would be willing/happy to drink these wines with me. This just goes to show how far the local natural wine scene has come. Moving down south from Champagne to Saint Bris in Cotes D’Auxerre, an appellation that used to belong in Chablis before it was removed in late 19th Century due to the phylloxera crisis that ravaged the area. The Goisot were one of the early adopter of biodynamic principles in Burgundy, the father and son team has been working this way since 1993 and now farms 43 individual vineyards this way. The Geules de Loup is from a single vineyard of the same name and is a 100% Chardonnay from 40 years old vines. Tasted in Zalto Burgundy, the 2015 evokes alluring ripe citrus and popcorn aromas. The palate is rich with ripe fruits but it does comes off a tad too concentrated for me despite the chalky minerality backbone. A case of where the nose shows much more promises than the actual taste. I did however share this bottle with a few friends so only managed to tried 1-2 glasses and hence it may not have been at its best given how young this wine is, not to mention the riper, fuller 2015 vintage. Entirely my fault though for not decanting this wine prior to serving as there were encouraging signs from the last glass.
