Rembrandt painted more self portraits than any other 17th century artist and we have two of them in our collection. This is one of them, when Rembrandt was 34 and at the height of his career.
Look at the hat and coat he is wearing. This is actually an elaborate costume in the fashion of the previous century. By painting himself in these clothes, he is now dressed as his famous predecessors and, in doing so, he seems to be deliberately placing himself among the great 'Old Masters'. Come and have a look at this bold self portrait in Room 22.

E N G: #UffiziPeople "I was born today, 1606, in Leiden, Holland and I’m going to tell you about this portrait. For almost 20 years I lived in Amsterdam, in a beautiful house at 4 Breestraat in Vlooienburg, the Jewish quarter where the Spanish and Portuguese exiles of the Sephardic community lived. In the morning I heard the shouting in Portuguese of the Jewish families’ children who went to school and on Friday I smelled the dishes cooked for Shabbat. From the house’s top floor I could see the synagogue. Many of my Jewish neighbours have become my friends and sitters of my paintings, like the rabbi portrayed here. From the stairway I saw him through his house’s windows and one day I asked him if I could portray him. He agreed. I portrayed him sitting on a wooden chair, with his hands clasped in the foreground and his right elbow resting on a table. The pensive face and the white beard emerge from the shadows, illuminated by an inner light, a reflection of his intense spiritual life".
Happy birthday to Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, born #onthisday in 1606!⠀

Rembrandt painted many tronies (character studies from life) of aged men and women during his early career in Leiden before 1631. The striking effect of this unknown subject derives from the intensity of his gaze and fanciful costume, which includes a polished metal gorget (also used in no. 3) and a tall ostrich plume. Positioned low in the pictorial field, the head is illuminated by cool light from the upper left, creating dramatic contrast in the face and a sense of atmosphere in the neutral setting. Rembrandt sensitively delineated the attributes of age in the network of blurred wrinkles, sparse mustache and beard, and furrowed brow. The sideward glance of the man’s remarkable moist gray eyes, suggests he is listening attentively.⠀

Happy Birthday #Rembrandt
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was #bornonthisday in 1606! Many of us are fascinated by his art. And so was Mark Rothko. His interest in Rembrandt focused as much on the artist’s subject matter and technique as on the effects that they would have on the viewer: the drama of the human condition. He was fascinated by Rembrandt’s handling of light to express emotions. And Rembrandt is famous for his self-portraits, a genre that was not common at all back in 17th century Holland. But he presented himself to the public and showed various moods in his – nearly countless – self-portraits. We are happy to have three of them in our Picture Gallery. One of them is this ‘Self-Portrait in a Fur Coat with Gold Chain and Earring’ from the year 1655. ✨

Rembrandt van Rijn was born on this day in 1606. He painted “A Polish Nobleman” in 1637. Through dramatic accents of light and dark on the sitter’s face, bold brushwork, and dense application of paint, Rembrandt created a powerful, almost sculptural presence. By emphasizing the man’s furrowed brow and by shading his eyes, Rembrandt has portrayed him as a thoughtful individual. #rembrandt
Vincent could be blown away by a masterpiece, as his brother Theo knew. To cheer him up on his 37th and last birthday, Theo gave him a few reproductions of etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn. This year is #RembrandtYear, as it is 350 years since Rembrandt died. But #OnThisDay, we celebrate his birthday! With one of Vincent’s favourite works by Rembrandt: The Jewish Bride.
