The CRISPR/Cas9 system is a precisely targeted bacterial defense system, used to control invading viruses. This technology has many potential applications including genetic changes in somatic and germ cells and the creation of knockout animals. Rhodotus is a genus in the fungus family Physalacriaceae. It is a monotypic genus and consists of the single mushroom species Rhodotus palmatus, known in the vernacularas the netted rhodotus, the rosy veincap, or the wrinkled peach. This uncommon species has a circumboreal distribution, and has been collected in eastern North America, northern Africa, Europe, and Asia; declining populations in Europe have led to its appearance in over half of the European fungal Red Lists of threatened species. Typically found growing on the stumps and logs of rotting hardwoods, mature specimens may usually be identified by the pinkish color and the distinctive ridged and veined surface of their rubbery caps; variations in the color and quantity of light received during development lead to variations in the size, shape, and cap color of fruit bodies. Do you like to print off papers to read them? ⁣ ⁣ I find it difficult to read on a screen and absorb information better when I can scribble down my thoughts and interact with the page as I'm a very kinetic and tactile type of learner ✍️⁣ ⁣ Printing them off also has the advantage that I'm slightly more picky about the papers that I read in detail as I don't want to just go printing papers off for the sake of it! It forces me to critically engage with the paper from when I'm reading the abstract to decide how it relates to my own work and whether it's worth reading it in more depth. ⁣ ⁣ When I'm reading a physical paper I can also turn off my computer so I'm not distracted by things like push notifications and emails which have a massive impact on concentration ⁣ ⁣ In some ways I wish I was better at reading literature on the screen but I've found something that works for me so I'm sticking to it for now! Today is a Scanning Electron Microscopy day ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This is the Tescan Mira 3 SEM! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ An SEM is a type of microscope which uses an electron beam to create an image by detecting secondary and backscattered electrons which bounce off the surface of the object you're taking a picture of. This means it can gather information about the topography if the surface of very very small things (down to a few nanometers)- much smaller than with a conventional optical microscope!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Today I'm taking some images of my Hall bars to check that the contacts are all okay and so that I have some 'before' images before I start shooting them with the focused ion beam to etch some quantum point contacts

Have you ever felt like you succeeded and failed at the same time? Today I completely lost my motivation and I felt like a huge failure. I have had a little problem (read, big problem) for some time now with finishing my measurements, thus completing my report that has to be sent to Oxford lab. At the end I asked my future supervisor for help and it turned out that what I was doing was good, just the laser was broken! ‍♀️ These news made me feel like I succeeded and failed at the same time. Succeeded because everything I have done and all the checks of the system were correctly executed (and optics/lasers is a new territory for me!). However, I felt like a failure (or more correctly, like an idiot) for not checking that freaking laser. I checked everything else! But somehow it was easier to believe that I was making a mistake either with the set up or with interpretation of the results than to think that it might have been something else.
