I love watching how sperm whales travel with one another. Here, a calf tucks its blow hole into the genital slit of either its mother or its aunt and catches a free ride. You would expect this from a calf but we see adults and subadults doing this also. It appears to be a form of easy transportation while staying literally in contact. When sperm whales are born, the trailing edge of their tails are smooth. However, sperm whales have a lifespan similar to humans. This adult could be 60 years old and it is hard to imagine the journey that this whale has been on to cause its tail to have sustained so much wear and tear. These markings on the tail allow the scientists we are working with to take Photo ID photographs, which enable them to identify individual whales in these social units. From @travisburkephotography - Swimming with these gentle giants. -- I held my breath and dove down toward the darkness, deep below me I could see whale sharks emerging as they made their way near the surface feeding on plankton. As I turned around, I saw this scene with beautiful rays of light casting down through the water from the early morning sun. -- Peering through the lens, I snapped a couple photos before starting my ascent back to the surface. -- Dive Master and Marine Biologist, @brinkleydavies shared her knowledge and passion for these sharks with me during our 15 hour day on the boat. These whale sharks lack natural predators, but in recent years have been listed as an endangered species due to shark finning, and other anthropogenic pressures such as fishing operations and plastic pollution. -- There is so much we still don’t know about these majestic creatures and it would be a shame to lose them forever. Just outside of Green River, Utah, the BLM's Fossil Point is an exciting place to see exposed fossils across the landscape. The prehistoric stream bed is now home to sandstone boulders with dozens of examples of fossilized dinosaur bone. These bones date back to the Jurassic Period (200 to 145 million years ago). As you explore the site remember to #TakeOnlyPictures. Not only is it illegal to remove vertebrate fossils from public lands, but it could impact future generations' enjoyment and knowledge of this remarkable place. The Shinob Kibe mesa is an important archaeological site, a well-known prominent landmark, and a sacred place to local Paiute Indians.
