With instax film how old is too old? Is out of date film still good? Read on for details! We all know that instant film has a use before date, after which results are not guaranteed. With some films, like Polaroid Originals film, you can see massive colour shifts, pod failures and other shortcomings with film only a year old, even if it’s refrigerated. So what about Instax film? I’d often wondered but thanks to the awesome @jay.regular I was able to find out! Jay had told me that he had some old, unrefrigerated instax film with an expiry date of 8/2013 - that means it was manufactured in 2011. He very kindly posted me a pack to test, which I just received. How would it perform now, when it was 8 years old? To eliminate variables I decided to test it in the instax Share SP-2 printer, against a current film (exp. 01/2021). I printed a shot from each pack and the results are stunning! I can see virtually NO difference between the two prints! The 2013 film with no refrigeration was ever so slightly lighter, but the images need to be next to each other and scrutinised meticulously to even see that. To say I was impressed is an understatement. So there you have it! If you see film going cheap because it’s out of date snap it up! It will be good for at least another 5 years.
