Thinking back to last month's hike along the Ridgeway national trail. One of the most pervasive sights on the skyline is first seen when reaching Uffington Castle, an Iron Age fort, which is just inside the Oxfordshire county border. It is Didcot Power Stations. Both power stations and their shared chimney are seen repeatedly from here until the end of the trail (a further 100km away) and, being almost 200m in height, it is not hard to see why! 41.9km⠀ ⠀ When first spotting this landmark, it is a helpful reminder that Britain's oldest white horse, the Uffington white horse is nearby too. It is estimated to be more than 3,000 years old and definitely worth a look. Coombe Hill Monument - a noteworthy spot along the Ridgeway national trail in Buckinghamshire with an incredible view! (Swipe for a video panorama) 30.7km Whether you’re hiking a large stretch of the Ridgeway or intending on doing a more manageable circular walk, if you are near Wendover, I recommend checking it out. Built to honour 148 men who died during the Second Boer War, it was destroyed in 1938 by lightning and then rebuilt in the same year. At 260m it has a commanding view of the beautiful Chilterns - a very worthwhile reward for the ascent! Where ever you are walking this weekend, I hope that you have a great one! You may have heard of hillside chalk cut figures, with white horses being the most popular - in Wiltshire there are 8 of them. The oldest white horse in Britain is in Uffington and is estimated to be 3,000 years old. White horses are one thing but how about a white lion? 30.7km⠀ ⠀ It surprised me too! I spotted it when I reached the end of the Ridgeway national trail last month at Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. Having been restored last year and being 147m long, it was quite hard to miss!⠀ ⠀ When was it made and why? It was completed in 1933 and is part of Whipsnade Zoo based in Bedfordshire, just across the county border. The zoo opened in 1931 and the figure was cut 2 years later to advertise the zoo. I wonder in how many moody shots this tree has starred?

A year and a day ago I completed my 3rd National Trail, Hadrian’s Wall. It seems like yesterday, but also a long time ago. . Before this I had completed the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path, The Ridgeway and 178 or so miles of the Thames Path. . I’m still quite stunned that I have walked so many incredible trails, paths, coastlines, ridges, country roads, old roman roads, massive main roads, old railway lines and even scrambles in my quest to walk the 19 UK National Trails as set out by the @ldwa_org. . I’m half way through the North Downs Way, walking it through the winter on day trips from London. My dad rightly pointed out the other day that I am actually half way there. 9.5 trails done. In a few weeks I expect to have it completed. That will be 10 done . . I feel incredibly fortunate that I have been able to have many wonderful experiences, and learn so much about hiking, camping and the UK. I’m going to start putting pen to paper and writing up some blogs to capture these moments before they fade into the humdrum of life. . I love the National Trails. Walking them, researching them and talking about them to anyone who will listen. If you are in the UK, there is probably one quite near you, and it is there simply for you to enjoy. Hopefully I can help you find it, and encourage you to have an adventure on it, by sharing my journey . .
