#abstraction is a cop out. That’s a joke that I used to tell myself. I even did a painting that says it in text. I think that is my way of teasing my sensitive side. The part of me that believes in the mystical power of art. What I really believe is that abstraction is an open language of emotional and spiritual communication. This is what comes out when I am open and unobstructed by self doubt and depression. I guess all art is abstraction when you break it down but getting this loose and free with myself shows the joy that is at the core of who I am. I am playful, wild, colorful and unpredictable. I have never appreciated it as much as I do now. This painting is about 9 feet wide and hangs in my living room. I look at it every day. Some days it’s just like wallpaper and sometimes it feels like a reminder of who I am that I really need to sit and look at. It is interesting that because of the Second World War main surrealists such as Yves Tanguy (1-3 pic in carousel), Kurt Seligmann (4-6) and Roberto Matta (7,8) moved from Paris to New York. In New York they practically created art scene and for sure was the most bright event in the art life so far. Because of them such American and last modernism movement as Abstract Expressionism was born. For example, Arshile Gorky (9,10) who was the part of Breton group left it later and started to associate himself with Abstract Expressionism. It is interesting for me how historical event changed the whole development of the culture and made New York the main center for art till today. And more or less because of several people migration.
