Pictured above is a modern reconstruction of the ancient Roman banded iron armor (left) next to archaeological remains of it (right). Often called Lorica Segmentata by modern historians and commentators -It is unknown what the Romans called this armor- it appears to have been introduced during the Principate, with the earliest date for its use being 9 AD. Cornelius Scipio Trains His Troops ➖ Better known by his title "Africanus" granted to him for his successful campaign in Africa, Scipio was the most successful Roman commander during the Second Punic War (219-202 BC), leading Roman armies to victory first in the Iberian peninsula and then at the heartland of Carthage itself. One of the reasons for his success' was how well he drilled his men, which is described well in this passage: --- "He himself spent some time at [New] Carthage assiduously training the naval forces and instructing the military Tribunes in the following method for training the infantry forces. On the first day he ordered them to run for thirty stades (about three and a half miles) in armor, and on the second all were to attend to, polish, and inspect all their weapons in full view; on the next day they were to rest and take their ease, and on the day after some were to fight with wooden swords covered with leather and fitted with buttons, while others were to throw spears with a button on the point; on the fifth day they were to return to the running exercises and begin the cycle again. He took the greatest care with the workmen so that there should be no deficiency in arms drill or real combat. He placed suitable men I charge of this essential task by rotation, as I explained above. Caesar's record on a Gallic night attack at Alesia ➖ "Then at midnight they suddenly set out from their camp and moved towards our fortifications in the plain. They suddenly raised a shout to inform those besieged in the Oppidum [of Alesia] of their approach, and then set about throwing wattles onto the trenches, driving our men off the rampart with slings and arrows and stones, and doing everything necessary to take our position by storm. At the same time Vercingetorix, hearing the noise of the shouting, sounded the trumpet and lead his forces out of the Oppidum. Our men moved up to the fortifications, each one taking up his allotted position, as on previous days. They kept the Gauls off with slings, large stones, bullets and stakes, which they had put ready at intervals along the rampart. It was impossible to see far because of the darkness, and there were heavy casualties on both sides. Many missiles were discharged by our artillery. The Legates Marcus Antonius and Caius Trebonius, who had been assigned to the defence of this sector, brought up men from the more distant redoubts and sent them in to reinforce any point where they had seen our men were under pressure. As long as the Gauls were at a distance from our fortification, they derived more advantage from the great numbers of missiles they were hurling. But when they came closer, the extra devices we had planted there took them by surprise. They got themselves caught up on the 'goads', or they fell into the pits and impaled themselves, or else they were pierced and killed by the javelins and siege spears that we hurled at them from the rampart and towers. Prajurit Roma pada saat ini merupakan titik puncak dari teknologi persenjataan dan perlengkapan Zaman Klasik. - Helm tipe Montefortino dikembangkan menjadi tipe Coolus dan tipe Imperial Gallic/Itallic. Kedua tipe ini semakin menekankan perlindungan pada pipi dengan membuat lempengan baja yang lebih merapat dan panjang kebawah serta pada leher belakang dengan menempa baja bagian tersebut lebih condong kebawah. Dibagian kening diatas mata diberi lempeng baja khusus untuk melindungi bagian atas kepala dan menetralkan hentakan dari serangan pada bagian tersebut. - Dimulai pada era Dinasti Julio-Claudian (dinasti Augustus), zirah model baru yang disebut Lorica Segmentata – zirah bersegmen. Dibentuk dengan menghubungkan beberapa lempengan besi yang saling yang tumpang tindih ke bawah menggunakan pengikat dari kulit dan benik-benik perunggu. Rekonstruksi dan uji coba modern membuktikan kekuatan perlindungan dari Lorica Segmentata dan pengguna mengenakan pakaian tambahan untuk semakin menyebar berat dari zirah. Zirah ini merupakan zirah ikonik Legion Roma, sampai media hiburan seperti dalam dunia sinema menggambarkan penggunaan zirah ini jauh sebelum atau jauh setelah periode penggunaanya. - Perisai yang digunakan Legion Roma dibentuk lebih persegi panjang dan semakin dicembungkan kedepan, dibuat dengan tiga lapis kayu. Sedangkan senjata yang digunakan masih sama. Gladius (pedang pendek), Pilum/Pila (lembing), dan Pugio (belati), hanya muncul beberapa variasi dari senjata-senjata yang sudah digunakan semenjak Masa Pertengahan Republik. Cohort Sebuah Cohort bisa di padankan dengan batalion dalam konsep militer modern. Menggantikan sistem unit Maniples, setiap Legion terdiri dari 10 Cohort dan setiap Cohort terdiri dari 6 Century. Jumlah prajurit dalam setiap Century ditambah dari 60 menjadi 80 Legionary. 480 Legionary menjadi jumlah standar sebuah Cohort dan 4.800 untuk sebuah Legion. - Unit terkecil dalam sebuah Legion adalah Contubernium – terdiri dari 8 Legionary yang dipimpin seorang Decanus. Setiap Contubernium hidup dalam satu tenda dan bertanggungjawab untuk membawa pasokan dan perlengkapannya sendiri. 10 Contubernium membentuk 1 Century yang dipimpin oleh seorang Centurion dibantu Optio. Satu Cohort biasanya dikomando oleh Centurion paling berpengalaman (disebut juga Pilus Prior) dari salah satu unit Century didalamnya. - Komposisi Cohort dalam Legion Roma diurutkan dari yang paling berpengalaman sebagai Cohort pertama dan rekrutan baru sebagai Cohort kesepuluh. Cohort pertama dalam sebuah Legion terdiri dari 5 Century namun dengan jumlah prajurit per unit yang dilipatgandakan menjadi 160 per Century. Centurion dari Century pertama di Cohort pertama sebuah Legion disebut Primus Pilus yang seringkali menjabat juga sebagai Praefectus Castrotum – komandan yang bertanggungjawab atas rutinitas keseharian suatu Legion. - Ditambahnya prajurit dalam unit Century bertujuan untuk membuat unit tersebut semakin mandiri. Prajurit-prajurit diwajibkan untuk mampu membangun tenda, membawa pasokan dan perlengkapan sendiri serta menjaga performa melalui latihan rutin. Karena kemandiriannya ini, secara strategik unit Cohort sangat efektif.
