#marchmeetthemaker Day 18 - Mistakes/lessons learned. Well where do I start... OH! We're talking about pottery here, well that narrows it down . . I think almost everything you do in ceramics is the result of a mistake you made, and the lessons you learn may be painful and costly, but in the end you rise a better artist/crafter/etc. . . The past 7 years that I've been playing with ceramics has been a learning curve, and it's only been in the past 7 months or so that I feel I've finally got a grip on what I'm doing. . . One of the hardest lessons to learn was that not everything is going to turn out the way you expect, and you're going to end up frustrated and smashing many sub quality pieces. You have to learn to let go. Once you do, you'll see your work in a whole new light and be more open to nipping potential mistakes in the bud before wasting valuable time and resources. . . *I've learned to not fiddle with a piece that simply isn't working - recycle it while it still can be. . *If my throwing game is off, I take a break to clear my head or work on something else. . *Just cause a piece is bisqued doesn't mean it has to be glazed. . *Just cause a piece is glazed doesn't mean it has to be saved. . * Not every day has to be a work work work productive day- you're allowed to take breaks and do nothing. . * Social media is not real life. You don't have to post every day to be a relevant artist/human being. Your following/popularity on IG doesn't define your worth. . . Today I want you to add “Not yet”, to your vocabulary. Too many of us operate in a fixed mindset. But the truth is, we have incredible potential to do ALL that we want to do. By simply adding “Not yet” into our vocabulary we are making one small shift towards a Growth Mindset. “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” So when asked, “Did you get that promotion?”, or “Are you finished with school?”, or “Have you hit that latest fitness goal?”, I hope we can each recognize the potential within us, and “Not yet” gives us room to grow.

I’ve discovered another use for our loft /cinema room! I can get YouTube on the big screen (projected onto the wall the light switch is on) and this morning I did a workout video followed by yoga. Molly wanted to join in so today I promised I’d get her a yoga mat and every morning before school we’re planning to do half an hour of yoga together. It’s like we’re actually doing a class but it’s free and far more convenient! I’m so excited by this as I stopped drinking alcohol nearly six weeks ago (minus one blip) and my sugar cravings have gone through the roof... I’ve actually put on weight ‍♀️ I’m not beating myself up over it but I do need to counteract by upping my exercise. I was about to rejoin the gym but with this new discovery (and the warmer weather) I don’t need to - RESULT! Not having the space to exercise at home has always been a barrier for me because, being a mum, I can’t just ‘go out for a run’. Liam commutes so he’s gone really early and gets back after 8pm and Molly’s only five so can’t be left home and her legs are too little to come with me. I’m lucky I work from home so I can often fit in a run after the school drop off. However it really eats into my day, so if I’m busy exercise goes out the window and becomes really inconsistent. I seriously don’t know how mums who work during school hours ever manage to keep fit! Exercising in this room was so far from my mind when we decided to convert the loft but it’s the perfect space.
