12,000 years ago humans invented agriculture. This change in our relationship with the land led to everything we know now. The strange thing about the last century or so is that it's now possible for humans to live without even being aware of their relationship with the land. The reality is, despite the break-neck pace of developing technology and the widening psychological and physical distance between us and the land, we are still 100% dependent on it, and that's not likely to change. At least, we can't depend on it. ⁣ ⁣ Concurrently, humans have become a problem for our land, our planet. The population is expected to level out by the end of this century around 12 billion, but can we make it ’til then? How are we going to be us and make it past the bottleneck of extinction? I don't think any one person knows how to answer that , but I'm interested in the people who have dedicated their lives to at least trying.⁣ ⁣ My web series, “How Do We Human?”, will be about the chaotic moment we're in in human history where many of us, or at least some of us, are choosing not to put blinders on but instead investigate how to adapt so that, to put it bluntly, our species won't destroy the life-sustaining climate of our planet and ourselves in the process. I will be following the activities of people who have varying ways of answering the question of what's the best way to be a human, all expressed through their craft, their mission, their heart, or their relationship with the land. This could be about homesteading and food, immediate relationships with the land, but also it can be about states of mind that indirectly relate to the land. How we think of ourselves as residents of our home planet.⁣ ⁣ #howdowehumaninfebruary #hopefortheanthropocene #elizabethrossanofilms #permaculture #lambingseason #lambs #sheepdairy #organicfarm #babylambs #February #traditionalsinging #lambsofinstagram #sheepoftheday #sheepfarmer #sheeplife #sheepworld #sheeplove #sheepstagram #rootedinvermont #growyourownfood #regenerativeagriculture #selfsustainable #selfsufficiency #sustainablefarming

A perfectly timed mother’s day calf. We were notified by someone driving on the road who yelled out, “your Bison is having a calf!” They get an A++ for effort.

7 years ago, we bought the land that would become Good Heart Farmstead. We didn't have a tractor, greenhouse, drilled well, or even a name for the farm yet. We did have a yurt, a small flock of sheep and moveable fencing. ❤️ We did have a vision and persistence and so much excitement. — Now, going into our 7th Summer CSA season, we have tools and infrastructure and machinery. The challenges are different, the vision has shifted (no more livestock, for one thing), but the persistence is still there. The excitement still piques, though I'd say it's grown more into a deep appreciation - a taproot we can draw on during hard days, and grow deeper through it all. — This photo was taken just after we bought the land in June 2012. Sometimes I find myself needing to look back to remember how far we've come. To remember the seed we started with and know that with care, patience, and persistence, we can grow what we dream of. — It's all just one step and then the other. One seed and then the other. — If you're just starting out, starting again, or in the midst of growing a business or a dream and trying to figure it all out, click the link in my profile and listen to the latest interview on The Good Heart Life: Meditation, Business & Finding Success Through Uncertainty. — Most of all, keep showing up. It all happens seed by seed. ❤️

MAPLE CREEMEE POP . Been dreaming up this flavor for a long time, and it’s day has finally come! Rich, creamy, nondairy maple goodness dipped in rainbow sprinkles. That little sprinkles crunch really just puts it over the edge. #textureonpoint . . . . . . . . . #joyridepops #maplecreemee #itsavermontthing #maple #icepop #popsicle #popsiclemagazine #icecream #creamy #sprinkles #healthyish #vegandessert #nicecream #plantbased #pinefor #nomnom #iamwellandgood #f52grams #dessertbae #vermonting #burlingtonvt #vtwomenpreneurs #vteats #rootedinvermont

Alive and still farming after a long winter that wouldn’t seem to quit, but today the sun swung by to say hello and so am I. Loads of piglets and lambs on the ground, grass greening up, poop piles about, seed trays sacking up, farmers’ markets have begun, two too many horny bulls, and a daunting project list. This is May 2019 at Prospect. Pretty similar to springs past.

For 3 years we started all our seeds in this little seed house attached to our sheep barn, in the middle of our field. We heated it with wood, and starting mid-March, Edge would bring his sleeping bag and pad, and sleep in the seed house, waking every few hours to stoke the fire. Waylon was a baby then, so I stayed in the yurt, snuggled up and nursing him through the night. — Oh how times change. Now, the seedlings sleep in our house, not the other way around. Edge finished up our new seed room yesterday, and it's filled with microgreens, peashoots, tiny tomatoes, onions, radishes, turnips, and herbs. — This room lets us start things earlier, and move them out to the greenhouse once they're ready for transplant. It helps us save on propane and get a jump-start on the season. And you know, it's also just really nice to smell the soil again.

It only took me 5 years of gardening in hostile climes and our aunt flying over to the States for the summer from France and suggesting the beauty and simplicity of a cloche and my mother-in-law then driving to @gardeners to buy them for me to understand that you don’t need to watch your eggplant/squash/garden needlessly wither on a chilly night just because they had the misfortune to be planted in Vermont. Temporarily abandoning hopes of a greenhouse and simply investing in these sweet little bells. . Thanks for the love @longestacresfarm ! And for this photo of our cloches on your gorgeous farm! . . . . . . #sunsetonthefarm #sunsets #drama #farmlife #vegetablegardening #plantprotection #lovegardeners #rootedinvermont #vermontlife #gardentools #eggplant #squash #cloche
