"Spring Hill" was built in Roslyn, New York, in 1903 for Wall Street stockbroker, William L. Stow and was then purchased by millionaire Henry C. Phipps. After the death of Phipps' wife in 1971, the family had the home demolished and sold the property to a developer (they could not pay the necessary 70K/yr in taxes). Now the site of the suuuuper luxurious Spring Hill at Old Westbury Development, the property has been divided into 22 lots (with prices ranging from $2 million to $8.5 million). While the mansion is gone, some artifacts of the original estate remain. Owner John Kean wanted to keep the ornate gates at the front of the property, but since they were designed to accommodate carriages, they were moved onto the grass. James K. Davis was a contractor for grand mansions for the one percent of his day. What his own Roslyn home may lack in size, it makes up for in details. The Victorian Eclectic home was completed in 1877, a year after his marriage to Eliza Charlick. A story on the new home said it was, "without any exception, the prettiest place in Roslyn. It is better to be born lucky than rich." Davis may not have been born rich, but it wasn't just luck that brought him success. He was working in a store at 14 and apprenticing a few years later and by 21, he was building homes. James and Eliza moved in with their newborn son, Frederick, but sadly Eliza died three years later. James later married Sarah Day Hegeman and they had six children: Mary, Lois, Marjorie, Eugenia, Bruce, and Ellen. While Davis worked on homes like the Bryce House and Harbor Hill, he was also quite the entrepreneur. He owned a meat market, an ice house, and a blacksmith shop. He also was a tax collector, bank director, Mason, and member of the Hook & Ladder Company. Frederick recalled his dad as a "quiet displinarian" who, not surprisingly, was often busy with work.
