A postcard with a past | Nested in the hills of Busan is the quirky and reclusive Gamcheon Culture Village, which is home to a wide array of street art, mural paintings and playful design such as a cafe shaped like a huge coffee mug. It is impossible to stroll through the colourful alleys of this village without a smile on your face - but life wasn’t always easy here.
During the Korean War (1950-1953), refugees flocked to Busan, the only safe haven left in South Korea after the invasion by the North. Within a year, the city’s population grew from 880,000 to 1.4 million people. Gamcheon, which had traditionally been home to some of Busan’s poorest residents, quickly turned into a refugee town as makeshift homes were erected from scrap iron, wood and rocks.
After the war, Gamcheon remained one of the poorer areas of Busan for decades. In 2009, the South Korean government stepped in by renovating the village, transforming it into the vibrant creative community it is today. After spending an afternoon getting lost in its maze-like alleys, I waited for blue hour to capture Gamcheon at its most charming - a postcard with a painful past.
A moment of reflection | I was met with a particularly colourful sunset in Haarlem last month, with the kind of clouds that make a happy photographer. A full-size landscape version of this photo is also available as print in my web shop - see link in bio (p.s. I will be adding many more photos over time)

The multilayered metropolis | This is Daegu, the third-largest city of South Korea, as seen from Apsan Mountain last month.
I was lucky to get one sharp shot just before sunset - even on a sturdy tripod, I could hardly keep my 100-400 mm lens still because of the fierce wind howling across the mountain top.
I was fascinated by the endless layers in this scene, which is why I zoomed in at 400 mm to get rid of all surrounding distractions and bring out the density that is so characteristic of South Korean megacities.
After all, what is photography but imposing a bit of order on the chaos of reality?
After a strenuous hike, not really knowing what to expect, I was happy to find one composition that I liked.
Prints of this photo - in a larger landscape format that shows many more buildings - are available. Feel free to DM me for more info. Particularly recommended for people who like to count windows.
Anticipation
One of the things you quickly learn along your photographic journey is to start anticipating what will happen the next moment.
After observing this scene for a while from the terrace on the 44th floor of my hotel in Dubai, I got fascinated by the trams passing by every few minutes. So I framed the shot first and then I waited for the next tram to add a dynamic element to the composition. I repeated this exercise a couple of times.
After a few attempts I was happy with the position of the tram in the shot. A moment like that can give a silly kind of satisfaction, creating a sense of order in a chaotic city.
By the way, I was lucky with the way the clouds enveloped the Burj Khalifa that morning - something I could not have planned for.
It’s this combination of planning, anticipation, luck and surprise that keeps photography interesting. And life, for that matter.
The neural network | Seen from above, Dubai's transport system reminded me of a giant neural network, with its train stations resembling nerve cells that fire away in the darkness.

When everything comes full circle | I was on my way back to my hotel in Incheon after a rather disappointing evening shoot that hadn’t quite worked out as planned, when I noticed this scene that made my heart beat faster because I have this strange obsession with reflections.
Moments like these remind you that when you venture into unknown areas, you won’t always find what you’re looking for, but as long as you’re out there, exploring, keeping your eyes open, you may actually find what you didn’t know you were looking for.
