This little nugget was hanging out in the marina today. Three of these little harbor seals seemed just as transfixed watching fish beneath the dock, as we were of them. It was amazing to get to see their full physique so clearly beneath the surface, their webbed hind flippers propelling them so quickly through the water. I could have stayed there all day just watching them jet back and forth, their quiet breaths barely audible as they broke the surface #harborseal #pinnipeds #salishsea #marinemammals #pnw

We couldn't wait to share this photo of cutie T124A3A from today's trip. He was breaching over and over while the rest of the family, along with the T86As and T101s, took down a Steller sea lion. We were able to see from the many belly photos we got that it is a boy! What a cutie!

Orca Magic
Video by our awesome friend : @slatermoorephotography
Today, let’s all do One Thing to help, protect & save Orcas, whether it’s your daily phone calls & letters to representatives, telling friends & family, switching to solar, refusing to consume salmon until there’s enough salmon for the starving orcas, refusing plastic, buying local, buying organic, riding your bike, planting trees, purchasing sustainable products, ... it all helps.

A very rare sighting of L Pod in Monterey Bay, California yesterday! It’s not the first time the Southern Residents have visited Monterey but the last time was back in 2011 which makes this a very special encounter!
-
With this incredible sighting came some very good news: the new calf L124, who was born in December 2018 and first seen in January this year, was seen among the whales with its mother L77 “Matia”! Little L124 is currently around three months old and according to the Monterey Bay Marine Life Studies the calf appears to be healthy and swam close to its mother’s side the whole time!
-
The Southern Resident killer whales have a pretty large known range that extends from southeastern Alaska to California and like most marine mammals, their movements are to follow their food source. During the spring, summer and fall they tend to spend most of their time in the inland waters of the southern end of Vancouver Island and northern Washington State as the Chinook salmon are returning to the Fraser River. In the winter the whales expand their range to the Pacific coast and they have been seen as far south as Monterey Bay, California and as far north as southeastern Alaska because there will be less salmon in inland waters.
-
Hopefully all Southern Residents are finding the food they need!
