Today's saree is the sister of another saree I've worn before. I confess, I have 3 of these in different colours . Do you also pick up the same thing in multiple colours?
.
A simple bengal cotton whose beauty lies in its vibrant colours and how well it drapes and feels.
.
Coincidentally, I wore the sister saree when I was ridiculously sleep deprived (all-nighter) and today too, I'm sleep deprived and tired. Why then would I make the effort to wear a saree See, I make a lot of effort for others (even strangers), then why shouldn't I make an effort for the pleasure of the most important person in my life (me, I'm talking about myself ).

Amma... ohh you’re not doing a twirl, kthxbai.

Once you get past Dash’s blink and you’ll miss it appearance please note that this video post contains IMPORTANT information!
More details will emerge in the days to come, but for now, if you live in the city I’ve hinted at, could you block off the afternoon of Tuesday the 28th of May if you fancy a catch up Watch this feed for the exact when and where
Since so many of you found my last post helpful, I thought I’d move on to the other aspect of intellectual property violation on Instagram.
As I mention yesterday when you report an account that has stolen your content, you pick the copyright infringement option. The other is a trademark violation, and this is trickier. What is a trademark, in the legal sense?
Simply put, it’s a design or expression that uniquely ties a product to the owner. Logos and brand names are straightforward examples of trademarks. Colours can be trademarked too; Tiffany Blue is iconic. Shapes can be trademarked too; Tobelerone chocolate has one for its unique bars.
Trademarks are a fascinating topic because the infringement is heavily based on where the copy-cat could potentially confuse customers. So you can have a Tiffany blue bathroom in your house, but not sell silver nose pins in a Tiffany Blue box.
With the Saree community on Instagram, trademark violation is a tricky business. In order to enforce a trademark, you have to register it in your own country. You can look up the process for it. Then products that you come up with are then protected by law.
But what if you journeyed to a small village in Tamil Nadu and found exquisitely woven Cottons, brought them home to be block printed with say, owl shapes. Your unique Sarees are all the rage, until a week later you see the SAME thing on another vendor’s feed. I’m sorry to say that if your design wasn’t trademarked there isn’t a thing you can do about it.
Also note that expressions of style are not trademarks. ANYONE can wear batik blouses, have conversations with their pets and twirl to their heart’s content.
And yet I know people get very het up when they see their style being copied. ‘I did it first’ is an indignant howl I often hear.
I understand it’s frustrating; you also need to remember that there is only one you. People who matter will recognise your values. They are the ones whom you need to draw close.
You only worry about staying ahead of the pack if you think it’s a race.
I am part of a community, not a competition. Why fight to stand out when you can instead choose to stand up for yourself and others?

Which is an old favourite from @kamaladelhi, handblock printed in a combination of pink stripes and floral jaal, outlined in a dark grey on a white mul base. .

Same day. Same person. Just about eight hours apart. .
The bindi has fallen victim to the sweltering heat. As has the hair. .
As for the eyess, well, that's another story. Maybe to be told another day. Maybe not... .
In an old favourite - an ivory-and-brick red patterned Maheshwari with black-and-zari borders and trim bought from a handloom fair about eight years ago. .

Some moons ago, had to go for a lunch meet with friends. Had worn this 20 year old chikankari saree, originally white on white, but then was made to dye it to a powder blue, as it was not a thing to wear a full white saree back then. Have decided to restore it back to its original colour. Or lack of colour.
Why is it that a full white attire is auspicious in one community but the opposite in another? It’s worn by brides in one culture, but it’s worn by widows in the other. Doesn’t white represent everything that is pure and innocent? It’s the colour of snow, of milk and of chalk. It’s the opposite of darkness.
Here’s to breaking from such shackles and liberating oneself from everything that limits oneself.

Does that hashtag even exist? If it does, good. If not, even better. Because that means it's a hashtag I made up all on my ownsome! .
Quite another story altogether that where other saree sakhis come up with catchy hashtags to celebrate specific weaves and drapes and themes, I come up with one that's against the very nature of Insta!
.
But I'm not one to sneer at small happinesses. And what better way to start off this inglorious hashtag than a post about a day that gifted me a string of tiny but unusual joys. .
A sudden freelance assignment that had to be done on last Saturday meant going out in the horrible heat. But, serendipity was such, that the hastily cobbled together team turned out to consist of a coordinator who was family and a photographer who was an old friend, while the person to be interviewed was an old acquaintance! The site of the interview was a buzzing campus, always an energiser. Which made the assignment as breezy as my saree that day. .
High on a productive morning, on our way back we decided to take a little detour to the only Korean bakery in town. We were amply rewarded with a fresh batch of cream choux and mung bean buns filled with the most delicious purplish-red mung bean paste. .
Imagine my joy when, soul replete with the happiness only baked sweeties can bring, I spotted this rare Blackjack frangipani plant! The blooms, with their blackish purple petals, were an exact match for my Dragonfruit pink @suta_bombay mul, with its purple and black warp and weft. And the tree provided the perfect backdrop for the photos of the day. .
Though I clean forgot to stand and take a photo next to the flowers to show off the colour match! But, so relieved was I with the way the day was beginning to turn breezy, so happy with the way the breeze was playing with my pallu, so thrilled with the sighting of this rare flower, that I have no regrets. .
The day had been wonderful, a purple patch kind of day. So what if later in the day, it became tinged with the purplish indigo of a day-old bruise. .
Till the point in these photos, my day was perfect. And I am grateful...

Most awkward pose ever! Looking nervous in the photo, since I was racing against time to get a click & run to work. The fan in full speed ain't helping either
.
On a not-so-completely different note, wore a saree today! An Assam Muga silk that I picked from a handloom exhibition few years ago for my birthday
.
The saree is a breeze to drape & I literally wore this for 13 straight hours like second skin!
