The Hall of the Five Hundred (Salone dei Cinquecento) is the largest and most important room in terms of artistic and historic value in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The Hall was built in 1494 and commissioned by Fra Girolamo Savonarola, a real trouble maker Dominican Friar, who made the grave mistake of ousting the powerful Medici’s from Florence, declaring a new Florentine Republic (headed by him of course), which lasted between 1494 and 1498. But you don’t mess with the Medici’s-that’s an old Tuscan saying that I guess Savanarola never heard. And so in short order thei Medici’s minions had Savonarola arrested in 1498, hanged but not quite to death and then burned him at the stake in the Plaza della Signoria. Why? Because he was guilty of being “A heretic, schismatic, and for preaching new things.” It’s the new things that always get you. The Medici’s returned to power and in 1540 chose Palazzo Vecchio as a residence, radically changing it. The Salone dei Cinquecento was transformed from a place of celebration of the power of the Republic to the boardroom of the Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, where he received ambassadors and gave audience to the people. Those who don’t learn from history, are doomed to repeat their mistakes as was made painfully clear to Savanarola. Ouchie! First they hung him but slowly and painfully so that he would be alive when they set him on fire. I guess the Medici’s just had a thing for dishes “flambé.” The truth is, I’ve read that Savanarola actually choked to death just as the flames engulfed him. So much for the flambé course. It doesn’t matter anyhow..it’s not like they were going to eat him-how ridiculous -that would have been barbaric! Plus everyone knows you need liquor to flambé a dish and there is no record of any alcohol at the execution. Hmmm. Something to ponder if you’re a complete idiot. Wait-I made that last part up! The Palazzo Vecchio is the most important historic government building in Florence, having been the seat of the Signoria of the Florentine Republic in the 14th century and then the government center of the Medici grand dukes of Tuscany. From 1865 to 1871 it housed the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Italy. Since 1872, it’s been the town hall. The building, with its dramatic bell tower and clock is Tuscan Gothic. It was constructed around 1300. The Palazzo faces the outdoor Plaza della Signoria, which has several important Renaissance sculptures on display. My favorite is the COPY of Michelangelo’s “David” (the original was created in 1504 and was carved from a single block of marble). That original used to be on the Plaza but a rowdy mob of Italian citizens got into a heated brawl in the Palazzo (over those pesky power-hungry Medici’s). Amidst all the screaming and fighting, furniture started flying. Sadly, that included one large bench that shot out of a window and landed directly on David’s left arm, breaking it into three pieces (so much for a single block of marble). Anyhow, the hot-headed but otherwise sensible Florentine’s had the original restored but wisely moved it off of the Plaza into the nearby and protected Accademia Gallery. But they replaced it with a really great copy, which now entrances and delights tourists daily (many years ago that included a young and really stupid me who told his friends,”I don’t need no stinking guide book to find the David! THAT’S him right there!”). Little did I know that the original was on display just a few hundred yards away inside the Accademia.
