Probably the most sought after and highly anticipated sighting of any game drive- the leopard (Panthera pardus). New research contradicts the widely held belief that world leopard populations remain high compared to other big cats. In fact the leopard is likely the most persecuted large cat in the world. Extinct in six countries and possibly extinct in six additional countries, leopards have vanished from almost 50% of their historic range in Africa and 85% in Eurasia. Leopards are listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species but are classified as "Endangered" in Central Asia and Sri Lanka and "Critically Endangered" in the Middle East, Russia, and on the Indonesian island of Java. The primary threat to the leopard is of course humans. The species is threatened by illegal killing for their skins and other body parts such as their teeth, whiskers and claws used for ceremonial regalia. Unfortunately leopards are also often seen as a nuisance to locals, when they are brought into close contact with human settlements, they may prey on livestock. Pastoralists will retaliate and kill the big cats in retribution or will attempt to exterminate them in order to prevent further livestock killings. Along with poorly managed trophy hunting, habitat fragmentation and a collapse in prey populations due to commercialised bushmeat hunting this species’ population has been greatly reduced throughout most of its range. A mother and her two sub adults lay resting on a termite mound scanning the open crest for any impala. It was no longer than 30 minutes after we had been sitting with them, when they were off stalking a herd of impala not to far away. This beautiful female leopard is well known amongst the guides at the Pangolin Khwai Camp, and often sighted by our guests.
