Antaño la identidad estaba sujeta a la palabra, al nombre que caracterizaba al individuo. La aparición de la fotografía desplazó el registro de la identidad a la imagen, en el rostro reflejado e inscrito. Con la posfotografía llega el turno a un baile de máscaras especulativo donde todos podemos inventarnos cómo queremos ser. Por primera vez en la historia somos dueños de nuestra apariencia y estamos en condiciones de gestionar esa apariencia según nos convenga. Los retratos y sobre todo los autorretratos se multiplican y se sitúan en la Red expresando un doble impulso narcisista y exhibicionista, que también tiende a disolver la membrana entre lo privado y lo público. En el “enjambre digital” —según término acuñado por Byung-Chul Han para referirse al espacio social de Internet—, todos interactuamos en una red infinita de conexiones donde modelamos las identidades en función de esos vínculos. En ese enjambre el fenómeno selfie constituye un significativo síntoma que proclama la supremacía del narcisismo sobre el reconocimiento del otro: es el triunfo del ego sobre el eros. Pero su avasallante irrupción entre las prácticas posfotográficas debe leerse en clave de gestión del impacto que deseamos producir en el prójimo. No olvidemos que por primera vez en la historia esa gestión no depende de fabricantes de imágenes ajenos a nosotros, se trate de artistas o fotógrafos profesionales, sino que está en nuestras manos. Por tanto, también lo está su sentido moral o político, y la responsabilidad que esa facultad entrañe."
