Looking to improve your serve? Here are 5 things you can copy from @djokernole to help improve your serve: . . 1. Lift the ball up only using your shoulder. Do not bend your elbow, flick your wrist, or roll the ball off your finger tips. Using only your shoulder allows for the most consistent toss placement. . . 2. Release the ball at head level to insure your toss goes where you need it. Many players release the ball too early, or too late, resulting in a lot of frustration. NOTE* though you are releasing at head level, your tossing arm should continue lifting after letting go of the ball and your tossing hand will end up reaching up toward the sky. . . 3. Try to put as little spin as possible on the ball when tossing. I’ve noticed over my years of coaching that players with the least consistent tosses have the most amount of spin on the ball (and vice versa) . . 4. Keep your tossing arm up for a really long time during the “knock the birthday hat off” portion of the swing. I usually have to tell students to feel like they’re keeping their arm up for too long. This helps your body not to collapse too early so you can properly swing up. . . 5. When you do begin dropping your tossing arm (it’ll drop as your racket drops down behind your back) pull it into your body as your racket approaches/makes contact with the ball. This reactive brake accelerates the racket for a few more MPH. GOOD LUCK!! • • Video Credit: @essentialtennis https://youtu.be/M-GuYmAAUec

Want a better return of serve? Just remember these four steps from @rogerfederer: • • Split step - Be airborne AS your opponent hits and land with a really wide base (look like the letter “A”). • • Unit Turn - A compact backswing where you feel like the racket only goes back as far as the unit turn takes it is the correct feeling. • • Hit - Keep you head/eyes fixed on the contact point to increase the chances of hitting the sweet spot. • • Step - The last thing that occurs is your cross over step lands. • • Huge shout out to @zenracquets - if you aren’t following them you’re really missing out. They have incredible original content.

It’s very important to have a great slice serve. Slice (side spin on s serve) is hit when your strings face toward your target but your racket travels to the right during contact. Be sure you pronate after contact. • • Video Credi: Jim Fawcette https://youtu.be/fofFYc-obTI

Here are three things you can copy from @domithiem if you’re looking for more racket head speed on your one handed backhand: • • 1. Keep the racket head up during the unit turn. When the racket falls from a high point it’ll make it easier to swing faster since it’s moving with gravity. • • 2. Stay sideways to your target during contact. Moving your off arm back during contact will stop your body’s rotation and accelerate your racket. • • 3. Lean back slightly during contact. This will treat your arm like a pendulum with a moving pivot to help increase your hand and racket speed. • • Video Credit: @zenracquets

Be sure to watch all 3 videos • Pronation should occur on every serve so you can maximize racket speed. • • I’m often asked how to pronate while hitting sidespin. The key to this is to understand two ideas: • • Use a continental grip (which requires pronation to point the strings toward your target) and make sure that the edge of your racket is leading toward the ball prior to hitting (supinated). Next, rotate the strings to the hit the ball with the sweet spot and continue rotating after contact until your strings face 180 degrees in the opposite direction (pronated). • • The ball will rotate (spin) when your racket travels in a different than your strings point at contact. Federer hits the ball with his strings pointing toward his target but swinging off to the right of his target in order to create the desired spin. • • Now combine these two ideas. With a continental, swing off to the right of your target (if you’re right handed) and pronate so that your strings face your target at the exact moment you contact the ball. • • Video Credit: @online_tennis_instruction https://youtu.be/mKXtVQnqhB4
