I’ve been tracking my thoughts lately to see what goes on in my mind around the practice of making my art. One thing I realized is that sometimes I’m so filled with anticipation to get started, that I jump right in. But sometimes, jumping in doesn’t work very well. I’m too excited and I find I’m not thinking or even sensing my feelings clearly. What I realized is that warming up with some free flowing work, drawing, scribbling or even splashy painting really helps. I loosen up, relax, give my brain a chance to connect with my “self”. Here I’ve got a variety of charcoals, big, bigger, best! I love that huge chunk of charcoal. It’s a giant. And I have chunk charcoals too that are soft and lovely. And conte that’s harder and a bit waxy. I just take the tools and let it rip. It’s fun and expressive. I’ll explore a few shapes and composition ideas too. They start off stiff and manipulated but the longer I go the better they get. Priming myself for the real work. But I actually think this part is real work too. It’s hard to slow down and do what I know works. But it always helps.

All that talk about black inks yesterday, and I had to attempt a black rose today! I say “attempt” because I’ve tried (and failed) quite a few times. It’s been hard to find dark shade that works but FINALLY a little success!!! This is diluted pretty much 1:1. Can you guess what number Copic gray it is? Sketchbook study work. So I’ve been working more in my sketchbook recently and also between canvas work to address some shifts in thoughts and ideas I have. I could see this as I headed closer to starting this course I’m in now. I’m at a crossroads and have been, I think, for a while this spring. “What direction or turn will I take next?” What I see myself doing is searching for the things that spark me and the sketchbook work is actually starting to show me. That and a few other things. It’s early days though and as an artist, a curious person by nature, one who at times gets lost in details that may be invisible to others, and thoughts that both intrigue and perplex me, I suspect a redirect in course is to be expected. Over and over again. Ask anyone who hikes with me. Sigh,… as she stops to examine the delicate petals on that tiny wild flower. Another sigh as she wanders off down that hidden animal trail with the words “wonder where this goes!” trailing behind her. I’m not like this all the time, but when I am, I go for it. I can confidently say there’s lots in our world to pull us back to the practical. But when the spirit calls though, that’s where I’m going to pay attention and head toward. At least until I get called back again.
