To freedive with the Great Hammerhead Sharks of Bimini. The odds were in our favor and we were even able to dive with a tiger shark, dolphins and shipwrecks! In recent news, the Great White Shark genome has been fully decoded. Recognized for its massive size and ability to dive up to 4,000 meters, they have been gaining more attention because their numbers have been declining in the world’s oceans. The great white genome was decoded by a team of scientists from Nova Southeastern University’s Save Our Seas foundations shark research center as well as scientists from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and Monterey Bay Aquarium (Nova Southeastern University 2018). Researchers were able to find out the sharks genetic changes as well as their wound-healing abilities and low rates of cancer (Imster 2019).
