Idk what day I’m on, so I’m just gonna say it’s Day 82 of #100daysofpracticechallenge This piece is “In the Style of Albeniz” by Rodion Shchedrin. Basically it’s a piece by a Russian composer trying to sound Spanish, and succeeding. I need to do a lot more listening, because as you can tell, I have no idea what I’m doing musically. I’m doing a lot of metronome practice and note reading, but I still have a ton of trouble understanding this piece. It’s very unorthodox, with lots of rubato and accelerando. I really like the piece itself, but I’m not liking the way I’m playing it. Besides my hands being rusty from less practice than usual, I just feel like I need to understand the piece a little more. I feel like I need to relax while playing (once I get a better idea of how it goes) so I can express the musicality of the piece. So I realize I’ve been absent for a while...I’ve been taking some time to relax during the break. I’ve still been practicing consistently, but a lot less so I could rest more, spend time with family and friends, and step back to think about what I’m doing with cello and with my life. Sometimes I feel like I’m not doing enough. Like I’ll never be good enough to make it in the music world. To be completely honest, I’m scared that l will always be mediocre, that I’m not improving fast enough. People tell me I’m getting better and I sound really good, but doubt (along with more than a few negative experiences) keeps creeping in and telling me that I won’t make it and I’ll never be enough as a cellist. I want to believe that’s not true, but that mindset has become an even bigger problem for me. I know I need to keep getting back up, to keep fighting (iow practicing), and keep doing music. I need to be resilient because I love music. Other than God and other people, it’s the most important thing in my life. This mindset has been bothering me a lot recently. If you’re religious, please pray for me that I’ll find peace and direction. Also, I’ll take advice and/or encouragement from anyone right about now. Does anyone else ever feel like this? How do you deal with feelings of inadequacy and being overwhelmed by your career path?
