Natural Clay IV. - Yixing purple sand clay Do you remember my late summer post about aged Yixing clay which I was happy to obtain when visiting China? If not, here are few pictures from the story #yixingclayinczech And here you can see the first pot I fired back then in comparison with the traditional way made Yixing pot made of the same clay. The pot was made by highly skillful and experiences potter Ms.Chen. Clay was given to me by her husband, Mr Zhou. The difference is huge and I honestly love both of them. These pots were not just made by different hands but also using a different technique, hand building of the traditional one versus wheel thrown pot. The traditional pot was fired in gas kiln s bit under 1200°C, my pot was in woodkiln, heavy reduction fire to around 1250°C. The clay in my woodkiln was overfired but has still strength and almost metal like feeling. This one stays with me and I am using it with sheng puehrs. So far, its performance is wonderful, teas are great. Last time I fired just this single pot, just to see how the clay handles the fire. Now, four-five more pots will be fired.
