What to wear?! What to wear?! What to wear?! Was the common refrain from hundreds of women around the world as we prepared for the largest gathering of the saree sisterhood yet!. . With Goa as the epicenter of the @sareespeak #allindiassmeet, there were events organised around the world, small and big to celebrate the saree sisterhood. I was so delighted to be able to partner with @iamsa1608 to organize the Singapore meet. So what did I wear? I chose a most unusual weave, a Himroo from Maharashtra. The Himroo is a silk and cotton saree that feels and looks like satin. It is only found in Aurangabad and is usually made as a shawl rather than a saree. This one was offered to me by the lovely ladies at @loomsandlinen when they got it as they know I like these unusual weaves. Blouse is from another saree and is stitched by @komsmuthiah My necklace is my new favorite guttapusalu that was made for me by @divine_raga . . One of the main jobs of the Chief Guest at Indian events is to light the diya. My family is a bit relaxed about this and we usually use a gas lighter. So when I was presented with matches to light the diya, it took me 3 tries to light it ‍♀️! Thankfully my hosts were better at this than I am so we got it lit and the event was under way! My final drape for 2018 was appropriately this gorgeous himroo for the Singapore Saree Speak Meet. Most collectors don’t have the himroo on their radar, tending to favour the more famous saree of Maharashtra, the paithani. I have yet to find a Paithani that i like for myself but I fell in love with the himroo on first sight. Woven almost exclusively in Aurangabad, it isn’t often found as a saree, instead it is often woven as shawls and bedspreads. From Wikipedia: Himroo is a fabric made of silk and cotton, which is grown locally in Aurangabad. Himroo was brought to Aurangabad in the reign of Mohammad Tughlaq, when he had shifted his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, Aurangabad. The word himroo originated from Persian word Hum-ruh which means 'similar'. Himroo is a replication of Kum-khwab, which was woven with pure golden and silver threads in olden days, and was meant for the royal families. Himroo uses Persian designs, and is very characteristic and distinctive in appearance. Himroo from Aurangabad is in demand for its unique style and design. Some historians believe that Himroo was the innovation of local craftsmen with very little Persian influence. Himroo Is woven near Zaffar Gate at the Himroo Fabrics.
