I’m in the business of changing lives through the game of basketball. I’m a coach, I’m a trainer but my 2 most important roles is Christian and mentor. Teaching basketball is easy. The hardest part of what i do is developing confidence and raising players self of esteem. While helping a player develop a skill will serve them through their athletic days but developing their confidence and self esteem will serve them for the rest of their lives. That’s what separates me from other trainers. ⠀

So I decided to do a series of training characteristics to consider BESIDES just getting stronger. Last post I spoke about elasticity & how our tendons are rubber bands that play a key role in our ability to express athleticism (be athletic). Part of that comes from our muscle fibers having rubber band qualities as well, even though tendons are able to be stretched with less force. The muscle fibers themselves actually have receptors to protect themselves from injury if they’re stretched too much, called muscle spindles. So, when a muscle is stretched, the muscle will be contracted subconsciously, & along with you actually contracting the muscle, you get an additional boost of force. This is the stretch shortening cycle (SSC), & is more neural (brain) centered than training for elasticity (peripheral or muscle/tendon centered).

How can we apply this? Drop/Depth Jumps are a great way to train the body to inhibit the Golgi Tendon organ (receptor that forces your muscles to relax) and turn on the muscle spindles. You can easily grab a plyo box ( start low, then increase height as build as you gain strength) & practice dropping into a countermovement jump (CMJ), and then turning it into a depth jump. This can be done on 2 feet, or 1 foot. Or, you can practice weighted/unweighted CMJ. What’s important is the concept, not necessarily the drills. Getting bigger & stronger is great, but to start transferring that to sport we have to eventually train movements at the speed of sport or under similar demands. Combine this concept with elasticity and you can easily begin to separate yourself as an athlete WITHOUT the need to just get big (this does help though too).
What a great day!!! That’s a wrap for our first day In Sudbury!! All 3 groups did amazing!! Here’s some pictures of each groups MVPs!!! .
