Last year I made the trek to South Africa for the Cape Wine Festival. Over a week I tasted hundreds of wines and visited a half-dozen growing regions. The sense of camaraderie and eagerness to explore the limits of wine making and grape growing were humbling. Their government, with a little prodding, has introduced a category for orange wines, Pet-Nats, and other styles that doesn’t conform to the limiting norms imposed by mass agriculture and mechanized bulk production. This progressive attitude and the sheer passion of the winemakers has basically forced us to add three new South African producers to our portfolio. The wines are finally here, we’ll be talking about them a lot over the upcoming weeks. Nearly one year ago now I made a wine in collaboration with @graperepublicpr & @fujimaking By then I was living in Japan since 8 month, bathing deeply in its culture and work world. We been picking the Delaware from a couple of pergola treillis vineyard, like all of them in this area they been built by the previous generation which were a 1.6m tall. So you can imagine the challenge for a 1.8m high gaijin to carry and load the crates full of grappes. The Delaware has been hand destemed for half of it and fermented for 1/3 into open top barrique and the rest into stainless steel for about 18 days before pressing and aged on its Lies for 8 months. On my way back to France I stopped in Montreal and I met the really talented @vaaandaaa from @super_bonjour and we decided to collaborate for the design of the Ronin Jiru label as she is a master of color shades & geometric contrast. The idea behind the winemaking & the label was to imagine that this wine would be the perfect cure of a dusty morning following a big drinking night with friends and leisure or to kick on that kind of night. Like a Miso Jiru. We produce only 860 bottles so this wine ll only be release in Japan for this time. Enjoy it and share it like a Ronin would do. Kampaï
