My first stop in #Ghana is at the Cape Coast Slave Castle. There are about 40 castles located on the coast and it’s a rough, but educational way to learn about the horrible history of the African slaves. .
.
In the beginning the castles were used for trading gold, timber and spices...but then evil took over and the world was changed forever...
.
.
I highly recommend this experience, but as I mentioned, it’s not an easy visit...have you ever visited any of the slave houses or castles in West Africa? If you could, would you go?

"The Gnaoua (Gnaoui singing, also spelled Gnaua, Gnawa, Guenaua, etc.), designate in Algeria, Morocco and other parts of the Maghreb members of sub-saharan Africa origin, mainly descendants of slaves, gathered in mystical Muslim brotherhoods in which trance plays an important role."

Today is #Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when news came to Galveston, Texas that “all slaves are free.” President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation two + a half years earlier but the horrific institution of slavery endured across much of the south. Former slaves began to gather on June 19 to create a unique tradition of celebrating it as a day of liberation in 1866. That tradition + the quest for unconditional freedom continues ✊. #BlackHistory
This is called the Door of no Return. African people were forced into ships from this door and trafficked to the americas where they were subjected to all forms of dehumanisation, degradation and of course slavery. These individuals were kindnapped and chained from all over Africa and bought by slave owners from different colonial powers to be shipped to their respective colonies in the Americas. It is estimated that some 15 million Africans have crossed the Atlantic from this island, with an estimated 6 million dead. Slave trade in Senegal started in 1536 and was abolished on 27th April 1848. Today, in Libya, African men continue to be bought and sold into modern day slavery. Across the continent, big corporations provide slavery like conditions to make money on the backs or African people, paying less than minimum wage and working them long hours. Modern day slavery is persistent and continues to affect people across the world. In some countries, this is exasperated by large number of police shootings and imprisonment without due process of black people, along with exclusion from professional, social and civic spaces and institutionalised racist behaviours. This subjected on the same people who were forcefully removed from their own homes and trafficked across the world to be made to work for free in horrific conditions. I have one more post left in me to raise awareness about the horrible crimes committed in Senegal during the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism.

Continuing with our #fiercewomenfridays in recognition of Women's History Month, today we remember Tituba.
A slave living in the home of Reverend Samuel Parris, Tituba was one of the first women to be accused of witchcraft in 1692. With no one to protect or defend her, Tituba confessed to witchcraft during her examination in early March of that year. Though she was imprisoned for the remainder of the witch trials, she survived her time in jail and was ultimately released the following summer, only to then be sold by Samuel Parris and vanish from the historical record.
Tituba's story is one of the most fascinating and unsatisfying, as we know almost nothing about her origins, or her life after the trials. However, we do know she was a woman who fought to keep herself alive, in the face of a community where she had no one to defend her. Today we remember that women's history is the history of individuals across all ages, social strata, and ethnic backgrounds. We honor Tituba's memory as a brave and resilient woman.
This image is of the remains of the Salem Village parsonage where Tituba lived in 1692. This site remains in Danvers and is open to the public.

"This house is strong and convenient, and will prove very comfortable. During the erection, many persons have come to see it, especially of the single roof, it being the first i've ever seen" - Henry Townsend
