“Since we knew both the application and the machine, we learned to diagnose troubles as well as, if not better than, the engineers. I tell you, those engineers loved it. They could leave the debugging to us.” - Jennings recalled.⠀
⠀
Jean Jennings Bartik was a member of a women-led programming team that worked on ENIAC. Part of the team is on this amazing picture!⠀

REPOST @martinsoft “It’s funny to think that, from the perspective of an outside observer, it would look as though “all” a developer does is sit and type commands into a computer all day. But we all know that there is FAR more to it than that!”
•
♂️ “Coding involves being able to hold a ton of different things in your head all at the same time: a mental model of code structure, system architecture, UI components, variables, function names, APIs, data structures and loads more! The actual writing of the code is only a tiny fraction of the effort. Most of the “action” happens in the mind of the developer, as the solution to a problem is formulated, mentally modelled, tested and creatively reasoned with, until finally it is translated into code.”
•
@martinsoft is so right Developers do sit in front a computer for the most part and most might think it’s boring or uninteresting, but so much is happening inside the mind

I got the promotion ⠀
⠀
Going from Tech Consultant ➡️ Senior Tech Consultant wont change my day to day job much. For the most part I’ll still be doing software development 40 hours a week, but it means there are more opportunities (and expectations) for leadership and involvement with project planning ⠀
⠀
My company does promotions once a year - all at once - so communication was really important. Starting last year I had meetings with my mentor, all my project managers, and other people who’d be making that decision to talk about expectations and how to get there ⠀
⠀
Honestly, it felt a little uncomfortable to start those conversations (this is my first job and first promotion) but it meant that other people were aware and looking for ways to help me grow. Instead of crossing my fingers and hoping for the best I had a “team” on my side who would tell me if I wasn’t performing well⠀
⠀
As an aside: the actual act of getting promoted didn’t feel as exciting as I thought it would. There wasn’t literal confetti and it hasn’t made me more excited to go to work. It is, however, an awesome acknowledgement of work well done and I’m excited about the experiences I’ve had as a result of all of those conversations ⠀
⠀
Next step: Architect⠀
Operating System: Program that manages relationships between a device’s hardware and software⠀
⠀
This is one of those #TenWordExplanations that I’ve found useful when I’m trying to explain why something isn’t compatible with someone’s computer. Though for a lot of digital natives OS may seem intuitive, for others it can still be a bit of a mystery as to why certain programs don’t work on their machines ⠀
⠀
What ten words would you use?⠀
