Like an American counterpart (-point?) to Serge Gainsbourg and Brigette Bardot, Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood made a brilliantly unique Acid Country record tarted up in Nashville drag. Hazlewood’s gift for producing and songwriting and Nancy’s pedigree as the gorgeous daughter of Ol’ Blue Eyes were a match made in Pop Shangri-La.
Of course the biggest standout here is the amazing “Some Velvet Morning,” 3:45 akin to traversing through a desert in permanent twilight on Mescaline. “Summer Wine” is also a psychedelic trip through the lens of a Technicolor Western. “Sand” and “Ladybird” round out the four best tunes here, both of which are lesser masterworks, but brilliant pieces nonetheless. What’s left are some Nashville duets, and the ones that work are obviously the Hazlewood-penned tunes. “Sundown, Sundown” has the trademark strings with his baritone sprechgesang, and even the treatment of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” is uniquely Hazlewood.
All said, this album is a rare example of how Nashville and LA pop can meld seamlessly without losing any sense of edge, danger, or integrity with the help of a seriously talented person(s). It is absolutely required listening for any aspiring producer, arranger, or songwriter.

SOME VELVET MORNING by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood is one of my favorite songs of all time, and inspired the name of my sculpture: Phaedra. I pay tribute to the song in the print that accompanies the sculpture. I was honored to illustrate a Nancy Sinatra album cover a couple years back (scroll through) and can attest to what an exquisite person she is •••
The Shag Store in a West Hollywood is having a cocktail reception to celebrate the release of the sculpture and print, Saturday April 20, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. It’s free and open to the public. #shag #phaedra #phaedraismyname #nancysinatra #leehazelwood #nancyandlee #somevelvetmorning
