Last moments of calm before I paddle into the notorious section downstream of Donald. I’m a little nervous, and excited, and patiently waiting on a few friends meeting me in their whitewater boats to run safety the day. I’m hoping we can all chuckle about how having three safety boaters was overkill in a few hours.

Floatilla! 49 people, 33 watercraft, 3 dogs. It was a beautiful evening for a paddle party on the Columbia last night, on the section I’m most familiar with, Nicholson to Golden. Thanks to all who came out, to @wildsightgolden for collaborating on the event, and to @glacierraftcompany for the shuttle. . I’ve been asking people what their relationship to the Columbia is, what role it plays in their lives. My relationship with it is in the midst of big changes, but in the past I’ve looked to this river as a place for relaxation and socializing, an escape from the daily grind, a space for meditation and contemplation, and a swimming hole on a hot evening. Many a good moment has been spent on this section, alone and with friends. Last night was full of good moments

Some 1,400 miles later, this is where it unnaturally ends. I was shocked when I first saw this on Jon Waterman’s source-to-sea trip for @natgeo. This frothy mess of garbage and ubiquitous single-use plastic is just two miles into Mexico—90 miles shy of the river’s historic terminus at the ocean (we hiked the rest of the delta). The snowmelt that sustains the Colorado River and irrigates the crops of America’s salad bowl no longer completes its journey to the Sea of Cortez. For six million years the river did complete that journey, creating the largest desert estuary in North America, but today the demands for water are too many. Changing climate patterns and repeated drought are all adding to the challenge, making it unlikely that this lifeline of the West, often called the “American Nile,” will reach the sea again anytime soon. While many groups are working to restore some of the delta, there is a lot of work ahead. When I first envisioned this adventure, I pictured time on the water with others complimented by time alone. In the first grant proposal I wrote: . “I will be working in isolation and in community at alternating intervals. This format serves my practice by allowing for input and idea generation with others followed by time for contemplation and synthesis in solitude. I expect that the words and interests of my most recent conversation will shape the way I view each new section of water, creating a kaleidoscope of experience as I travel.” . I’m not even a week in and I already feel that this is panning out just as hoped. At the moment I’m traveling with good friends (actually, at this very moment I’m being towed by these guys, so I can post without drifting into a thicket ), and I’m quite sure they’re enhancing my experience now and downstream when I’m alone again.
