Technique matters when looking for speed. I'm turning every stone in my hunt for the perfect stroke. We measured my rowing using the gear by Dr. Kleshnev and Quiske in Turku (the Mecca of Finnish rowing). The biometrics system by Dr Kleshnev is excellent but quite fiddly to calibrate and setting up can take some time. The Quiske system is simpler to install but doesn’t give power but focuses on pure technique. One Quiske pod was attached to the bottom of my seat with DualLock tape (make sure there’s no metal between the pod and the receiving phone!!): The seat pod shows the leg speed not only during the drive but also during recovery. Another Quiske pod was pulled onto the oar to show the full angle and oar profile during the entire stroke. He still holds the Finnish records on 2000m (5:46.6) and 10km (32:14.0). Harsh training and long sessions on the static erg had dire consequences and Klaus had numerous operations due to back and hip injuries in 2013. He thought his days rowing were over, but then he found the dynamic indoor rowing machine. “I was able to start rowing again also during the winter time thanks to the RP3. Dynamic indoor rowing feels similar to real on water rowing and it is more gentle on the lower back than static rowing.
