Here it is! His first big breakthrough with Early Intervention Therapy. He was able to functionally make a request using an AAC device. Over and over again he requested... bubbles!⠀

His Speech Therapist, Tiffany Roberts, shared, "Today reminded me why I chose this field❤️."⠀

What is seen above is known as a barium swallow study. In this type of study a patient goes through different trials of swallowing barium-liquids with different consistencies and barium poured on solids to observe the flow of ingested substances through the gastrointestinal tract. A barium swallow is extremely useful for understanding swallowing problems (dysphagia), monitoring stricture (narrowing of the esophagus), looking for obstructions such as esophageal carcinomas (tumors growing and narrowing the esophagus), seeing hernias of the stomach (Hiatal hernia). It’s an excellent tool for looking at the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract (ex. the autonomic esophageal muscle contractions that move substances down the esophagus! ***This patient was suffering from dysphagia and problems with food getting caught in their throat due to damage of cranial nerves IX and X. As these nerves control the muscles in the hypopharynx and these muscles are mostly not voluntarily controlled. If you look the poor contracting of these muscles is leading to residual liquid/food particles leaking into larynx, which can cause aspiration and can lead to the patient chocking or even getting aspiration pneumonia, also if you look again you can see trapped fragments also in the hypopharynx. The muscles are still there but the superior laryngeal nerve (part of CN X) isn’t telling them to contract. #medicine #doctor #xray #physician #nurse #nursing #physicianassistant #speechtherapy #speechpathology #biology #usmle #usmlestep1 #mcat #science #medical #anatomy #physiology #chemistry #physics #neurology #neuroscience #pharmacology #nursepractitioner #optometry #dentistry #radiology #barium #bariumswallow #nerve #muscle

Co-regulation is the interactions that provide the support and care someone needs, to regulate their attention, thoughts, feeling and behaviors. When you're carrying your infant, rocking them, making reassuring noises, making sure all their needs are met, you're using co-regulation strategies.
Co-regulation has been found to be a key factor in developing a child's regulation skills but studies found that as a child grows older, co-regulation interventions are less and less used. The need for co-regulation continues throughout our lives, here are some tips on what parents can do to co-regulate their child.

I have been so emotional in the past few weeks. I’ve been thinking about how much life is going to change in just a few months. For one, Christian will be starting school, and I’m so nervous. If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know that Christian is very delayed in his speech. He had speech therapy twice a week, and child development once a week for half a year. Once he turned 3, our services ended and we were left on our own. Although his speech has improved, and his vocabulary extended immensely, he is still very hard to understand. In a couple of weeks we are meeting with someone from our district, to see what kind of services he will receive in school. I get so sad thinking about how much he’s going to struggle getting others to understand him. What if no one wants to play with him because they don’t know what he’s saying? What if he gets teased? What if he has no friends? What if he needs something and the teacher won’t know what it is? I know my son, and when we can’t figure out what he’s saying he gets really frustrated. Then, Luis, Scarlett and I feel sad that he feels frustrated. That goes to show you how tough a speech delay can be not only for a child, but for a family as well. Please remember not to compare your child to others, they all grow at their own pace. If someone has a child who is older than yours and that child is noticeably behind in their development don’t send messages bragging about how yours is already doing everything theirs isn’t. Yup, that actually happened to me. I was messaged frequently with “my kid is so much younger than yours and already does this and that.. how come yours isn’t?” That stuff hurts. So keep it to yourself! Lastly, if your pediatrician suggests speech therapy for your child, you should do it. You have absolutely NOTHING to lose, and so much to gain. #speechdelay
Soooo many concepts to highlight with play dough. Also - so fun to make! My daughter and I made this batch together. We used 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1T coconut oil, 1T cream of tartar, and 1 cup boiling water. Mix, knead, add food coloring. ❤️ .
