This sphinx is named Hyles gallii (Le sphinx de la garance), sphingidae family. On the hill of “La Grave, hautes alpes”, this sphinx abounds at this time. They are dozens to hover in the air. It is a lepidoptera that moves very fast, so it is difficult to catch.

This is @bibliophyll here to say goodbye and thank you so much for joining me on this fun filled week as we explored the wonderful and wacky world of insects!
Before I go, I wanted to leave you with one last post about my favorite little hornworms!
Numerous plants have evolved toxic chemical compounds as a means of self defense, but many different species of caterpillars have also evolved the ability to sequester those toxic compounds to use as their own defense mechanisms. Tobacco hornworms like this one here have developed a fascinating relationship with the tobacco they consume, where they actually use the nicotine in the plants to weaponized their bad breath!
As the hornworm feeds on the tobacco leaves, the ingested nicotine moves from the gut to the hemolymph, this is the blood-like fluid that fills their open circulatory system. When the caterpillar breathes through little openings along the side of their body called spiriacles, it exhales the stinky nicotine. This creates a odorous atmosphere around the caterpillar that’s repulsive to predators. The disgusting smell is an excellent indication to potential predators that the caterpillar would be a poisonous meal and is off of the menu. Reasearchers have astutely deemed this tactic as “defense halitosis”, and it was the first discovery of any kind of animal using halitosis to advertise their toxicity!
Swipe for a couple more videos of this munching machine in action, as well as some shots of the spiracles, they look like eye spots running along the side of its body.
Thank you once again for joining me this week while we discussed insect biodiversity!
