Progressive overload is a fundamental strength and conditioning principle that is supported by both research and tradition. It serves two key purposes. Firstly, it allows us to maintain the same stimulus on the muscle fibers of the trained muscle from one workout to the next. Secondly, it allows us to determine whether a training program is actually working.
However, it is very easy to fool ourselves into thinking that progressive overload is happening when it is not. Efficient sprinting is poetry in motion. Here a Jr 400m National champ performs wicket runs as part of his return to perform program. The athlete came to Athletic Lab following a nasty hamstring injury at the indoor scholastic national track & field championships. The wickets are spaced at progressively longer distances through the run to accommodate his acceleration curve. The distances between the hurdles has increased each week as he recovers from his injury and he will soon run unconstrained and at maximal velocity. The mini hurdles force front side mechanics and optimal touchdown placement which are critical components of efficient sprinting and injury reduction.
