What scared me the most when I first started clinical? PEDIATRICS! I'd only done adult ICU prior to school and the thought of pediatric anesthesia made me so nervous! They're so small. The med doses are so small. They always seemed so fragile to me. - So naturally my first ever clincal rotation was at the children's hospital. Fun fact: I used to have to bring deodorant in my clinical bag because I was so nervous I would literally sweat the entire day - Fast forward to now and I'm back at the children's hospital as a senior! It's crazy to think back to the first time I was here. Now I actually love peds! I don't sweat through my shirts anymore and I'm not scared of kids! - What changed over the past 2 years? Well I have 1500+ hours of anesthesia experience now and so much more knowledge. Experience and knowledge are the keys to confidence in the clinical setting. When you're new you can't rely on your experience so you have to really focus on that knowledge. So read up on what you don't know. Ask questions. Come to clinical prepared every day. Take initiative and remember, you are learning! It's okay if you don't know something as long as you take the steps to figure it out! And don't forget your deodorant!! - @wellsrn

In 6 days someone is going to let me into an operating room to try my hand at putting theory into practice. And yeah, it’s scary as shit. There is nothing more humbling than the realization that the reason you have so very much to learn is because there are so many things that can go wrong. Airway emergencies. Clots. Bleeds. Cardiac arrests. Patients aren’t cut & dry. They come to you with conditions - ranging from pathological disease to psychiatric issues to problems of addiction (public or not) - & it’s your job to help ensure the safety of that human being in an educated, non-judgmental manner. I’m tired - like so tired - like my alarm went off & I had some choice words for my cell phone...but I truly cannot wait to be back in the hospital. I miss the buzz. I miss the energy. I miss the critical thinking & the hands-on-learning & the toys & the chaos & the adrenaline. And maybe that makes me crazy, but there is nothing more motivating than knowing that the last year of solitary academic confinement (lol) is finally going to put conceptual into clinical. Oh, & I finally washed my hair after burning through a can of dry shampoo this week lol ‍♀️...thanks @bumbleandbumble for getting me ready & out the door in 10 minutes! This sacrifice is so real: it’s going to be a gorgeous weekend, & I know I’ll be spending it inside the walls of a coffee shop or library. But I am hopeful that the unrelenting grind will be worth it in the end. Thanks to everyone for being patient with me - my family, friends, & all of you - this wild ride is a temporary measure for a life-long pursuit. My ８pillars of success ✨ ❶ INTENT I said to myself years ago that I wanted to become a nurse anesthetist. That wasn’t enough. I had to live INTENTIONALLY every day to achieve my goal. Go beyond just the “intent to succeed.” ❷ PASSION I have a unique love for the art and science of anesthesia. It’s not just a well-paying job to me. Interacting with the patients pre-op, inducing them into a slumber, maintaining their vitals beat by beat, then emerging them as if the surgical insult never happened...it’s that passion, every time I walk into the OR that drives me. ❸ DISCIPLINE Saying you’re going to do something, and actually doing it can be difficult sometimes. Learn to set limits, become your own motivation and discipline yourself to prioritize. ❹ PATIENCE Don’t rush it. It took me 4 years of undergrad, 3 years of CVICU work and 3 more years of schooling to get here. Everything happened when the time was right...there was no rush to the finish line. ❺ RESILIENCE Getting through the lows. Losing my grandfather during school was tough. But you have to bounce back....I know he’s proud of me. ❻ FAILURE Success doesn’t come without failures. Periodt. ❼ HUMILITY I went to school not because I knew it all, but I knew that there was much to be learned and I humbled myself to be taught by amazing physician and nurse anesthesiologists. Confidence + Humbleness = charisma. ❽ SELF-LOVE I was thrown into the deep end of singleness out of a long relationship a couple weeks before CRNA school started.
