• BOOKS • Reading is so incredibly ‘normal’ in our day-to-day that I rarely think to post about it - like eating or bathing or brushing your teeth - isn’t it funny how sometimes we have these deeply embedded practises that are so second nature that we don’t think about them, but in reality they are some of the most important things we will ever do?! . . There are so many reasons why reading to your child is so vital, especially in the early years, but here are the ones that I think are most important: - It promotes a LOVE of reading. And a love of reading, is a love of learning. And a child with a love of learning is an educated, driven, passionate person. A world changer, in short. . - It strengthens your relationship with your child - Reading is one of the biggest ways parents can connect emotionally with their children . - It promotes brain and language development - you’ll expose your children to 1.8 million words per year by reading to them for 20 minutes a day! . - It is the single most important thing you can do to assist them in becoming fluent readers - seeing and hearing words strung together in a meaningful way, every day, is the best way you can support them to one day be able to read, write and comprehend . We read at breakfast time every day - it starts the day off really well for us which I love. And then we read throughout the rest of the day whenever we can - I read to calm the girls down, I read when they’re upset, I read before I do chores or when we’re all a bit cranky. • NUMBER BUGS • This mornings wall activity! We do about two wall activities per week - normally I focus one on numeracy and one on literacy! . This mornings number bugs was easy - tape clear contact to the wall sticky-side-out using masking tape or painters tape . Cut circles out of coloured paper - I traced around a cup, and then I layered the paper on top of each other so I only had to cut a few circles instead of all of them individually! I drew bugs eyes and then a number on one of the wings, and dots showing the same number on the other side. I cut them all in half, and stuck the number halves on the contact paper. Then I gave the girls the dot halves and they had to count the dots and match them to the corresponding bug! . Activities like this are so good because I can give Miss 3 the numbers below ten and Miss almost-5 the teen and over-the-decade numbers it was a good challenge for both of them! . When they had finished, I called out numbers and they had to jump and point to them on the wall! My teacher-mum heart is so full after doing this . • ROTATION DAY • I’ve been a bit slack with rotating recently, but I’m trying to give myself lots of grace in this adjustment to life with three! So it’s been a while, but that’s ok - I don’t like boxing myself in with timetables on when I have to rotate, I always say it’s about what works for our family at the time! . It takes a bit of effort to get started and maintain playroom rotations, but I think it is so worth it to see the great play that comes out of them! For anyone new to the concept - playroom rotation means taking out toys/activities from the room and replacing them with ‘new’ things (not brand new, but other toys that we have stored away). It promotes independent play and engagement, gets more use out of your toys (because they are a ‘novelty’ again when they’ve been put away for a while), and also allows you to stay more in-touch with what your children are interested in and meet their developmental needs! I’m a big advocate for playroom rotations! . I’ll be showing the whole room in stories later today, and I’ll be saving it to highlights as per usual! . I store all the things that are ‘out’ of rotation in our cupboard under the stairs - see my ‘storage system’ highlight! . • SEE-THROUGH TABLETOP EASEL • Another @ikea_australia hack!! I made this see-through tabletop easel using an ikea kids weaving frame! It was probably the easiest hack ever you just need the weaving frame and a piece of perspex to fit inside it! . I’m always looking at ways to extend what the girls have access to in terms of art supplies because I think they’re a really worthwhile investment as the are so great for promoting creativity! I’ve been wanting a tabletop see-through easel for a while to change-up the surfaces the girls can work on, and this is really perfect for our space! . It worked out cheaper than buying one, though probably not quite as cheap as diy-ing one from scratch. I bought my perspex off eBay (just search clear perspex /acrylic sheet) but I think Bunnings also sell Perspex! You’ll need to cut it to the right size (I think sometimes Bunnings do that for you as well!) . The frame has screws on the back that you tighten to hold the perspex in place, and loosen to take it out to wash. You can also just wipe it down with a wipe I’ll show some close up videos in stories! . Miss 3 was straight into this today she LOVES process art - never focussing on the product but just enjoying the creative process. I’m so glad that this can extend her love of creating .
