The 4th Placebo's record is like a digest of the accumulated experiences with their albums and parallel collaborations (Trash palace, Alpine star), especially with the electronic sounds. The singles are numerous, at the basic instrumental trio, central pillar of the power of the songs, was added the use of synthetic sounds having an influence on the general atmosphere.
The lyrics evoke past romantic relationships and what we can keep in the depths of ourselves, whether positive or negative. Not only it make us bigger and hurt us, but it accompanies us, is part of us. And we have to do with it. «Although we have kept our rage, it's a very sentimental and melancholic record. An analytical summary of emotions we have felt in the last three years.»
Brian Molko, BM, Les Inrocks 2003
The album demonstrated Placebo's talent for writing effective songs which combine the best of alternative rock and electrorock. But Brian Molko didn't hesitate to confide in ballads much more intimist, with high intensity like the melancholic Sleeping With Ghosts/Soulmates with this superb bass and this electro very cerebral side. "Inspired by a crazy American psychologist who believes in the cliché of eternal love. He thought two of his patients were soulmates who’d been reincarnated through many previous lives."
Brian Molko, BM, Rock Sound, April 2003
We find an important emotion in the lyrics dragging a dull pain to the rhythm of its floating synth arrangements. Brian asked us not to moan and cry anymore "Soulmate dry your eye"
What doesn't kill us makes us stronger... Placebo recorded again Sleeping With Ghosts for This Picture, CD single and changed its name for Soulmates. It's this version which was played during the shows.
With this album, Placebo remained true to themselves but evolve with sincerity, between rage and worry, gravity and melancholy. Sleeping With Ghosts/Soulmates are very, very beautiful jewels full of shivers, for me wonderful tracks and among Placebo's best songs.

“i was always a loner. the three of us are like that; we have gone through adolescence locked in our room, playing music. and like many boys this age, i was dreaming to become a star. a city like luxembourg can be stifling when you try to forge your identity. i couldn’t be myself there. i felt secluded, far from the places where i wanted to be. there was no place where i could have express myself, find a feedback. from this isolation, i made songs like teenage angst and burger queen, because fatally that made me a voyeur. it’s not the best place to observe the world.”
I'M STILL NUT SATISFIED EITHER, BRIAN.
